Restoration ecologists in their work are generally trying to reestablish a "reference ecosystem" that existed at some earlier point in that area. Almost everywhere on this planet any reference ecosystem that is recent enough for us to have sufficient data about must have had a significant level of human input and of course the humans in question are likely going to be the indigenous people of that area. So any restoration project that is not trying to get people, particularly indigenous people, back into cultural relationships with the land, is not restoration ecology
