@maiyannah "Noel", he asked, "exactly how much more boilerplate stuff are you going to type before we get to work?" "Not much", the young faced worker replied, with a big grin on his face, "I just have to enable a few experimental features, monkey around with the method resolution order, and..." http://www.perladvent.org/2017/2017-12-06.html

@fl0wn @lnxw48a1 consent is required for any sex, despite profession: is this a bigoted right-wing view now?

@benis @lnxw48a1 @clacke at least you don't have to use a VAT fax. :>

@bobjonkman @clacke I wouldn't mind ads as much if it weren't frequently tied in with "analytics" tracking and other 3rd party nonsense. If a site hosts ads itself, offering a promo code or whatever, meh.

@purplehippo Hi reader in %COUNTRY%, it seems you use Wikipedia a lot; I think that’s great and hope you find it useful. It’s a little awkward to ask, but today we need your help. We depend on donations averaging %CURRENCY% %AVERAGE%, but fewer than 1% of readers choose to give. If you donate just %CURRENCY% %COFFEE%, you would help keep Wikipedia thriving for years. That’s right, the price of a cup of coffee is all I ask. Please take a minute to keep Wikipedia growing. Thank you. — Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia Founder

@lnxw48a1 "The software -- first identified on November 15 -- is called "HP Touchpoint Analytics Service" and appears to replace the self-managed HP Touchpoint Manager solution. According to the official productivity description, it features "the tools you need to ensure all your managed devices' security -- and brings you greater peace of mind". The problem is, it's installing itself without permission and is wreaking havoc on customers' systems." peaceful!

@moonman "What do they tell us about contemporary corporate social media and its related phenomena: surveillance, privacy, power, self-expression, and sociality? This essay answers these questions by theorizing alternative social media. The empirical data for this alternative social media theory are drawn from previous work on alternative sites such as Diaspora, rstat us, Twister, GNU social, and the Dark Web Social Network. These cases are used to build a generalized conceptual framework. However, this article does not solely theorize from these examples, but rather seeks to contextualize and historicize alternative social media theory within larger bodies of work." http://www.robertwgehl.org/text/pubs/Gehl_2015_The%20Case%20for%20Alternative%20Social%20Media.pdf

@ivesen it does seem silly to change a system config file to prefer one over the other. Curl probably has a cozy -6 and -4 flag. Firefox should put something for that in about:config that extentions could toggle. Maybe there is already. From my gai.conf manpage: "A call to getaddrinfo(3) might return multiple answers. According to
RFC 3484 these answers must be sorted so that the answer with the high‐
est success rate is first in the list. The RFC provides an algorithm
for the sorting. The static rules are not always adequate, though.
For this reason, the RFC also requires that system administrators
should have the possibility to dynamically change the sorting. For the
glibc implementation, this can be achieved with the /etc/gai.conf file."
