I agree as well, Stallman talks are great if you are interested in the philosophy and the social, ethical and political aspects of Free Software. But I'm not sure if you will find the right arguments to teach companies about the economic values of Free Software. Therefore I would rather look at talks from Simon Phipps and other: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xup0HOyQy8U
@bob Remember what Stallman did ~30 years ago when proprietary software dominated, he didn't recommended abstinence he came up with a positive answer aka Free Software. We need to do the same with today's evolving technology (cloud, saas, IoT, whatever). Ignoring it will change nothing we have to get engaged and shape it in a freedom and privacy respecting way.
@rysiek Can you please open a feature request on github.com/nextcloud/server? That's the easiest way to discuss it with the developers and get it implemented. Of course a pull request would be even more awesome. ;) @nextcloud
@raucao 1) one is a black box where you have to trust the ownet the other one not, IMHO this makes a difference. 2) AFAIK that's much more than WhatsApp does: https://signal.org/blog/private-contact-discovery/ the last time I checks WhatsApp synced and stored the whole address book. 3) IMHO it makes a difference, first the meta data are different, see 2. Second whether you can combine it with all the online and offline information from facebook or not makes a difference as well.
You want to break with old habits? Getting used to use a new search engine, online translator, etc. can be really hard. I just learned about #LeechBlock, a nice #Firefox and #Chromium extension which allows you to block certain URLs or forward them. You can set up rules like "forward google.com to startpage.com" or "forward translate.google.com to deepl.com". Now every time your bad habit kicks in, your browser will remind you what you really want to do. 😀 http://www.proginosko.com/leechblock/
Barcelona migrates to Free Software. The plan is to start with the applications until the last remaining proprietary software is the operating system which will then be replaced by GNU/Linux. https://itsfoss.com/barcelona-open-source/#pmpc
@hoergen@Tobias I think it would be also good to have a declaration, signed by all projects who agree that federation between multiple networks is important and who agree to actively work on keeping the different solutions compatible and take issues about interoperability problems serious and prioritize them. Because at the moment it is hard to tell who is part of the federation, and even more important who is part of it by accident or by commitment.
@junglestrike@vinzv@phildini@bob at this point I would even be happy to ignore the "average user" for now, if all the people and organisations who know the importance of free and decentralised systems would finally start using them instead of complaining on Twitter & Co that they are not perfect.
