I don't have any need for a #Windows #VPS, but I'll send this info to S and K, who are being dragged into $EMPLOYER's cloud-centric future. If they get some hands on with something like this in the next year or so and also something like #MSAzure, they'll be ahead of the curve.
I remember when a Windows #VPS was generally so expensive that you only did it if you absolutely had to fit into a Windows Server + ActiveDirectory + IIS + SQL Server + ... world. At these prices, I suspect they aren't paying the license fees ... the buyer will be forced to pay them on top of whatever they pay for the VPS.
That's like: this car is $20K. If you also want the engine, that's $20K more. For $10K more, we'll throw in the braking system.
LEB is in the midst of their Black Friday blowout. The above "deal" on a #Windows #VPS is an example. They are on both #Low_End_Box and #Low_End_Talk ... but besides not having any budget available, I also remember a few years ago when several #LEB hosts (who all used #ColoCrossing's dedicated servers, if I remember correctly) were shut down a few weeks after a similar sales event. I doubt that any of the buyers got refunds for unused hosting time that they'd paid for.
I also looked at #Dell and #Microsoft Surface "2n1" tablet-laptop units. Over $1,000 for the cheapest in-stock models, plus all the pain and suffering that goes with using #Windows.
Seriously, this sort of thing should be a sign that #Windows is not "enterprise" ready. I had specific tasks to do today, but the update cycle prevented any of them from being accomplished.
I can guarantee this is the best impromptu rant against Microsoft and their disdain for your privacy that you will watch today (from yesterday’s S’update):
If it is compared with #Bing’s search and the built-in #Windows search, it probably is improved. Since today’s my day off and Rich from Mich (-igan) keeps calling to ask about setting up a laptop, I opened Windows Explorer, found the folder, searched for the “IT Setups Guide” document ... it didn’t appear. But when I manually scrolled and found it, it was there under the name I searched for.
In Rich’s defense, he’s setting up a domain laptop for another user in a location that does not have a connection to the domain. I’m not even sure the person who writes that document even covered that situation, but it can’t hurt to ensure Rich has access to the unofficial reference that is now being used in official trainings.
@adcock No, I have not had any recent issues with #PulseAudio. Others have, but I've been using #Win10 or my #iPad for media playing and voicechat.
I did have a #Windows issue where a chat could not find my microphone except during audio setup, but I think it was because #WinUpdate required a reboot.
@musicman if they’re using #Java, they’re probably going for cross-platform. It is less true than before, but even now, #Windows administrators prefer GUI tools, even when CLI / TUI tools are more functional and faster.
#ShowerThoughts we've pushed back against #SPOV (Single Points of Failure) in digital technology for years, and won: * we defeated mainframes with personal computers and #InternetProtocols (TCP/IP) * we defeated the #IBM monopoly on the PC with Windows-compatible generics * we defeated #AOL and #Compuserve with the web protocols * we defeated the #Windows monopoly with the #Linux kernel, which enabled OS diversity on user devices (#GNU, #Android, #Sailfish, and more)
