Speaking of #tornadoes, I'm watching the Weather Channel in the lunch room and they are talking about severe #t-storms and possible tornadoes in #TX, #OK, #AR, #MS, #AL, #TN, #KY. These are fast movong storms, so there is no time for waiting until a storm is confirmed.

Survivors emerge from wreckage after US storms kill 9 people
SELMA, Ala. (AP) — Stunned residents tried to salvage belongings, and rescue crews pulled survivors from beneath collapsed houses Friday in the aftermath of a tornado-spawning storm system that killed at least nine people as it barreled across parts of Georgia and Alabama.

Got some #NOAA / #NWS notifications about severe #t-storms in parts of #Kansas and #Nebraska late last night / early this morning. About two hours later, they sent red flag warnings (fire weather watches and warnings) for nearby and partially overlapping areas. It just seems weird that they’re warning about rain, hail, winds … and then a few hours later, some of the same areas are being warned about fire danger.

#NOAA / #NWS has been sending alerts for severe #t-storms with heavy rainfall and flash flooding most of today, covering much of #San_Bernardino County and parts of #Riverside County in !SoCal.

A couple of those alerts covered areas near me. My personal phone got alerted for #flash_floods, but my work phone (which was also with me) did not. This illustrates why people should get NOAA weather alert radios for their homes and other places where they spend a lot of time. (NOTE: Your $EMPLOYER may not allow you to set one up at the workplace.)

The alerts transmitted by mobile carriers are not dependable. In some areas, one carrier will have service and another will not. In other areas, multiple carriers may have service, but only one will alert. In still other areas, multiple carriers will transmit alerts, but there may be a few minutes between carriers.

They used to cost around $40 at Walmart. You have to find out the NOAA alert code for your county and enter it into the radio. Then, when it picks up the code, it will emit a loud beeping noise, then switch on the audio of the nearest NOAA weather radio station ... which should be describing the alert details.

In some places, the county-level alerts are not very helpful. San Bernardino County is one of those places, because the county is the largest in the lower 48 states, and covers an area from Montclair to Needles (multiple hours of driving apart from each other). But in most of the rest of the country, they are very helpful. For example, Wayne County, #MI (Detroit area) is relatively compact, so a weather alert there is likely relevant.

#NOAA / #NWS alerting about severe #t-storms, heavy rain, flash flooding in #San_Bernardino County and #Inyo County in #California, #Clark County and #Nye County in #Nevada, and #Mohave County in #Arizona

Examples of areas affected include Barstow, Baker, Needles, Fort Irwin, Daggett, Lynwood, Kelso, Mitchell Caverns, Ludlow, Amboy, Newberry Springs, Lake Havasu City, Mohave Valley, Bullhead City, Laughlin, Cima, Mountain Pass, Death Valley National Monument, Mojave National Preserve, Lone Pine. Highways: #I-15, #I-40, Highway 95, SR-127, Highway 190.

I don't see #Riverside County on the list, but looking at the map, it looks like Blythe is on the edge of the rainfall zone.

If you are travelling across the Mojave Desert in any of these three states, be alert to flooding.

#NOAA / #NWS is alerting for severe #t-storms in the Kansas City #KS and #MO area, with 80MPH straight line winds, hail. The storms are moving E and NE at 60-85 miles per hour, double the usual speed.

Looking at the #NOAA satellite view. There's a line of storms shooting from the SE corner of Nebraska, across the bottom of Iowa and top of Missouri, broadening out in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and starting to enter parts of Pennsylvania and New York. If you're in any of those areas, prepare for what looks like a pretty strong bunch of #t-storms.

Flooding reported over the roadway at #I-70 exit 124 in Columbia #MO. If you are travelling across the state of #Missouri today, be aware that the #t-storms and possible #tornado have brought some flooding with them (hopefully minor flooding that doesn’t cost anyone their life).

Naturally, they say “turn around, don’t drown”, but that might not be such a good idea on a major Interstate Highway.
