That said, I'm sure that #TrueNAS compares *very* favorably with #Synology's software and probably with #QNap's software also.

I finally added the other HDD to tje #NAS. Now I'm looking through its control panel, trying to tell it to use the new disk. I'm not entirely sure I need to do this. #Synology isn't very clear about that.

I don't like all the cutesy apps for the #Synology #NAS. Particularly the way each app's storage is somehow separate from the others _and_ they aren't segregated by user.
I really want just a networked file system. I can store my grandchild photos under "/myname/Pictures" and put my documents and spreadsheets under "/myname/Documents"; my .oga, .ogg, and .flac files can go under "/myname/Music" ... with permissions.
Then if I wanted to use their audio streaming app, once I logged in, it would know where my collection is, and would play only my music. Naturally, there would be a "/public" with subdirs for Music, Documents, Photos, etc. The apps would give the choice of showing / playing /public files or not doing so.
The default upload / download / display / play would of course be private (user account only). With a checkbox, the user could upload files to subdirs of /public, and view / play / download files from subdirs of /public.
(NOTE: there is a filesystem exposed to my file browser [in my case, I'm using Krusader and SMB4K], but it does not show the files available to the apps.)

Now that I've had a little time to see them in action, I'm not a fan of the installable services on the #NAS. For example, If I upload a photo of #GS3 (to "/photo" AKA the photos folder) I don't necessarily want to share it with everyone in the house. I should have to intentionally select "share", otherwise, it should be handled in a more private-ish manner. I think #Synology made some bad decisions.

I was seriously thinking the #Synology #NAS's weird permissions settings and the collection of client apps were too much hassle for a limited benefit. But being able to play the same song on every device I own when I'm in reach of the home #Wi-Fi is a powerful attractant.
Now that it is working again, let's see how long it takes them to fill 7TiB of space.

Suddenly remembered that I was reinitializing the family #NAS ( #Synology DS416j ) before I left #SoCal for #Sacramento. They haven't been using it for 7 months (6 months while I was in #Sac, almost a month since I returned).

@geniusmusing Yikes! What is the advantage of #Drobo compared with a standard #Synology or #Qnap NAS (or even an #Odroid HC-1)?
