@fitheach I'll do what I did with #Solo, and watch a cam rip before I decide. I did end up seeing Solo on the big screen with a couple of friends and we all enjoyed it.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Saturday, 30-Jun-2018 07:53:42 UTC Strypey @SlowRain I guess we'll have to agree to disagree about Leia vs. Padme and about #Solo. What I found interesting in that editing video was the way lines were cut from George's screenplay, both in production and in the edit, which improved the characters. That's why I find the #FanEdits of the #prequels so intriguing; the cinema releases were badly under-edited.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Thursday, 21-Jun-2018 17:31:05 UTC Strypey @SlowRain also, if Han was merely a type, he would have started #Solo the same way he was in Ep 4. Instead, he starts out quite different, more optimistic and self-assured, and as a consequence of things that happens to him in the course of the movie, he starts to change into the cynical, money-grubbing scoundrel he is at the start of Ep 4, and still is in some ways at the start of Ep 5. Even when Solo ends, there's still room for more of that transition story to be told

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Friday, 15-Jun-2018 11:21:16 UTC Strypey @SlowRain it doesn't make any sense of introduce #Qi'ra at the start of #Solo and then not bring her back at all until the sequel. If #DrydenVoss' right-hand women wasn't Qi'ra, it would make more sense to start the first first film with Han signing up to join the Empire, then have that open sequence leading up to that point as the start of the sequel.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Wednesday, 13-Jun-2018 04:27:08 UTC Strypey @SlowRain even #DarthVadar is reduced a huffing and puffing Big Bad Wolf in #R1, with none of the gravitas or character depth of his presence in 4-6. #GalenErso dials it in from Planet B. IMHO the only really good character is #OrsonKrennic. I really wish they'd got that guy to play #GeneralHux, and given his character even half of the sophistication and menace of Krennic (or #DrydenVoss from #Solo).

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Wednesday, 13-Jun-2018 03:31:04 UTC Strypey @SlowRain I'm really keen to try the Machete order. I was even thinking you could do a Machete Order type sequence centred around Han's story, not Luke's. It could go something like 4-6, #Solo, then 7. Alternatively 7 could go first, as a noirish prologue. We meet this grizzled veteran, see his death at his own son's hands, and wonder "who is this guy, and how did he come to this"? Queue #Solo, then 4-6. Han's arc from street rat to rebel general to betrayed Dad laid bare

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Wednesday, 13-Jun-2018 02:02:11 UTC Strypey @SlowRain I actually agree with most of what you say about the Ep 7 characters, and that's what makes them *characters*, not just types ("I'm the pilot!"). Yes Ep 8 mostly failed to build their arcs, I'm hoping JJ can pull the marshmallow out of the fire with Ep 9. But remember, this is a trilogy, characters arcs have to unfold slower. #R1 and #Solo, being self-contained, only have one film to play out entire character arcs. IMHO #Solo achieves that where #R1 fails.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Wednesday, 13-Jun-2018 01:36:56 UTC Strypey @lnxw48a1 Maybe one day we'll get to see the real 7-9 stories as anthology prequels films, once the CGI gets good enough to digital clones to stand-in for the original characters, or even with new actors. I found Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover pretty convincing as Han and Lando in #Solo (wouldn't have even noticed the new Chewie if I didn't already know it was a new actor).

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Jun-2018 01:31:23 UTC Strypey @SlowRain to this day I struggle to remember all the main #R1 characters' names, and I've seen it 3 times (out of curiosity, how many can you name without consulting #IMDB or #Wikipedia?). I've seen #Solo twice, and I can at least tell you the first name of every character that has one (clearly stated in dialogue that is). I cared when Qi'ra was left behind on Correlia. I cared when Val and Rio died. When Has shot Beckett, I felt vindicated an conflicted along with him.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Monday, 11-Jun-2018 06:28:15 UTC Strypey @lnxw48a1 4) Lando. With Luke and Han all buddy, buddy, and Luke going off to Degobah for most of the film anyway, the character tricycle that make Ep 4 so dynamic is missing a wheel. Lando fills this vacuum beautifully. I can *feel* from the tension between him and Han that they have a complicated back story, without pages of exposition dialogue giving me any more than the #CliffNotes of the #Solo story. The scenes with all three of them zing.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Monday, 11-Jun-2018 06:04:20 UTC Strypey @SlowRain @whistlewright @lnxw48a1 maybe there's a fundamental divide here in what people are looking for in #StarWars? Some of us watch for the stories, especially the characters arcs, and some of us watch for the battle scenes, novel use of #FX, and the general visual spectacle. If the latter is what you're after, the prequels and #R1 serve you much better, and #Solo isn't going to be nearly as interesting, since its primarily a character-driven film.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Monday, 11-Jun-2018 05:23:28 UTC Strypey @SlowRain my personal spin on the Machete Order would add #Solo after Ep 6, and then Ep 7. Questions, 1) did you watch the original trilogy with or without the pre-prequel digital tack-ons ("specialized" or "unspecialized"), 2) if you first saw the prequels as a child, have you rewatched them as an adult?

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Sunday, 10-Jun-2018 20:40:19 UTC Strypey Overall, #TFA and #Solo are the kind of #StarWars films I want to see more of, #TLJ is the kind I want to see less of, and flabby filler like R1 I want to see none of. For all my criticisms of Ep 8, it was still better in most ways than R1. But the idea of Johnston getting to direct a whole new trilogy creates a deep disturbance in the force, and I'm hoping against hope that JJ Abrams can rescue the galaxy in Ep. 9 from the mess that #RianJohnston made of Ep 8.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Sunday, 10-Jun-2018 19:49:54 UTC Strypey The only female character somewhat let down in #Solo was Val. Those who have seen #Westworld know Thandie Newton is a powerhouse actor, and I would have happily seen Val play the role of Han's mentor and betrayer, and Beckett sacrifice himself (along with whoever decided to give a #StarWars character an ill-fitting name like "Tobias Beckett"!?!). But despite her short screen time, Val is still a great character, who knows her own mind, and decides her own fate.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Sunday, 10-Jun-2018 18:29:25 UTC Strypey Today, I paid money to see #Solo: A #StarWars Story. I was really disappointed with both #R1 and #TLJ (see my previous rants here), so I watched a cam rip first, not expecting much. I was blown away. Even watched at the quality of listening to a live concert over AM radio, it was awesome. I convinced my wife and a friend to come watch it on the big screen with me, and we all agree it was the second best - if not the best - of the new Star Wars films.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Friday, 01-Jun-2018 21:20:56 UTC Strypey One other thing, IMHO the box office take from each new #StarWars film reflects how fans felt about the last one. I blame the underwhelming turnout for #Solo on how badly the last two let us down. Hopefully the word will get around that #Solo is actually good (not the Thor-Ragnarok-esque parody the original directors apparently had planned), and fans will pay to tell Disney *this* is what we want from Star Wars, not cutesy penguins and race horses:

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Friday, 01-Jun-2018 21:11:59 UTC Strypey I just watched a "preview" version of the Han Solo prequel. This is IMHO the best #StarWars film since Ep.7 (spoiled only by a certain prequel character turning up at the end for no good reason). #RogueOne didn't do anything to make me care about any of its cartoonish characters, and #TheLastJedi ... well ... almost nothing in the plot made sense and it suffered from some *major* prequelitis, but it was ... OK. If I can, I'll pay money to see #Solo on a big screen.
