I continue to really like #rust as a programming language. Even though I'm writing more #raku these days, I still love Rust (and am writing something in it right now).

That said, it's increasingly clear to me that Rust is _primarily_ targeted at the Big Tech usecase (aka "at scale") and only secondarily interested in the Free Software usecase.

Today's news that the Rust Foundation is reserving *half* of its board seats for Big Tech provides additional confirmation.

If you’re a #Rustacean / #Rustacrucian, #Deno may be interesting simply because it is written in #Rust ... by the same person who started #Node.js.

    See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3BM9TB-8yA

If you’re interested in !TclTk, then you may find #jsish interesting, because its internals are designed based on some of Tcl’s internals, and because it integrates the #Fossil #DVCS and can be updated using standard Fossil commands.

@bthall says he got #Pijul installed and #Rust working correctly ... by uninstalling the Rust version from the OS package manager and following the curl-pipe-sh method here: https://www.rust-lang.org/tools/install

I’m not doing that. There’s another way to get Rustup, and I can make it use the OS installation as default, too. It’ll allow me to use their then-current version when I need to without losing the OS-installed default.

(I’m so very glad that both #gdc and #ldc for !DLang, along with #dub, are in Debian / Ubuntu and work fine. I’m not a #Rustacean or #Rusticrucian, so I don’t want something that I’ll forget to update between my occasional uses.)

@musicman I agree about exec pay.

As for side projects, in their new, limited-resource world, every new project takes resources away from #Firefox, #Thunderbird, and #Rust. Sometimes that's worth the cost, sometimes it isn't, but take a look at how many projects they've abandoned (such as their mobile OS).

I’m answering here to Discussion #444 on the Nest. Is Pijul still under active development? Last patches on master were June 8th? It seems like patches were pretty regular before then, maybe work is just being done in private and not pushed to public but I sure hope there is still activity, I really love this project. That’s right, the last patches are pretty old. A few things have happened since then, but they’re not public yet. This has included (1) thinking about new algorithms to solve ...

@dwaltiz #Matrix ( #Synapse ) appears to be very inefficient to host, but I don't think #Python can be blamed for most of it, or their #Rust rewrite would not have stalled. I think they made to protocol too complex. And storing history forever on the server was an error, IMO. It means that if you're willing to give it an hour or so to scroll back (seriously), you can retrieve stuff that is way old, but why? Better to purge stuff after some reasonable period (30-90 days) and relieve both storage pressure and users' wait time.

Secondly, I think they needed to give more attention to their encryption issues earlier. My personal contacts mostly left over the continued cannot retrieve this message because ... has not sent us the key.

Thirdly, Client synchronization is still a problem. If I have Riot / miniVector / Nheko open on three different devices, two or three times a day, they'll lose sync on downloading new messages and stay that way for an hour or more at a time.

I am personally willing to give them more time to deal with these issues, but partly because without any contacts, I don't deal with most of those issues much any more. I use it mostly as an #IRC bouncer and secondly for a very small group of rooms which themselves have low traffic.

    1. Making a leaf future for tokio
I play around with a standalone future to see how the tokio executor’s polling works in practice. I then adapt a callback-based API to work with futures, including a full implementation of a leaf future that transitions from NotReady to Ready.

    1. std threads vs tokio Runtime
In Rust code, two ways to run concurrent tasks are spawning threads using the standard library, and using the tokio crate for async I/O. In this video I make a test program with 100 tasks that take different amounts of time and compare how threads are utilised with each approach.
