In theory, I agree, but in practice, I have used #Ring, the earlier version of #Jami. The experience was so poor that I can no longer get my in-person contacts to try anything that is not #Facebook / #Instagram / #Zoom. And that's without ever trying the #videochat functionality ... we only used text chats and it was still a really poor experience.
I've heard it got better, but of course, none of my in-person contacts will try it again. This also affects apps like #Briar and #Session. -

@lxo Unless the people using #Jami are pretty advanced, they won’t like it. Having to be online at the same time, difficulties trying to use the same ID on multiple devices, those are things that most people will not tolerate.
Maybe they have fixed some issues since I last tried to use it, but it was unpleasant to use during and shortly after the GNU #Ring days. -

@geniusmusing @lxo This is important. #GNU #Jami used to only send when both parties were online simultaneously. If the parties in the conversation are in different timezones, that may not happen often.
Users reasonably want end-to-end encryption (E2EE), but still want some basic usability.
(The experience back in the GNU #Ring days was pretty bad. Even today, none of my contacts will reconsider it.) -

Likewise, I’ve pretty much abandoned #Jami (or #Ring, if you used it previously) because all my contacts dumped it years back when an update forced everyone to re-add their contacts. -

Experience with #Jami's ancestor #Ring tells me that it needs a fairly technical user who is willing to tolerate some annoying deficiencies. My contacts have all dropped it, including one son who is a network engineer.
Be careful about promoting it to people who are not willing to endure those things, or we can chase people away from all non-Facebook communications software. -

@Blort
My own family dumped #Ring (old name for #Jami) after an update forced us to re-request our contacts. But there were other issues as well.
The biggest for us was that there is not any store-and-forward, so your contacts have to be connected at the same time for you to send text posts. Germany is probably all in one time zone, but we were spread across four time zones, which made it impractical. They've added a little dot that shows when a contact is online, but we didn't have that when we tried it, so you'd send a message and wait to see whether it ever found its destination.
Another big issue was not having an iOS client, so Apple-using family members were excluded.
Even when both sides were connected, transmitting messages was slow enough that we never did try media calls.
I also tried to get them to try #Tox, but if you have multiple devices, they each wind up with a different ToxID. I'm told there's a way to get around this, but am I going to travel halfway across the US to individually set up each device for each family member?

Thanks. This is a tough one. #Wire is the first and only privacy-centric tool that is in widespread use among my friends and family. Several of them tried #Ring (now #Jami) before that, but it was a bad experience all around and cries of "it got better" won't get anyone to try it.

I should find my notes about my experiences with #Ring / #Jami and #Matrix. I have not written any notes about #Wire (which I use daily) or about #Tox or #Briar (easy; no contacts will test either, so I have no experiences with them). -

Is there a Jami (formerly Ring) command-line client out there yet?

... and here's the Jami screenshot. Note that despite the fact I'm pulling this directly from their repo, it's still using the old #GNU #Ring branding (Jami is still part of the GNU Project but they seem to be playing that down a bit in the visual branding since the rename).

@clacke Jami = #Ring. New name. When did you try it last?
> This is a conundrum for p2p communications
... with devices that depend on battery power. True. Although I think it has as much to do with the efficiency of subsystems that handle things like push notifications as the apps themselves. I suspect grown-up GNU/Linux coming to mobile devices will lead to improvements in this that aren't possible with kindergarten OS like #Android.

@teaneedz the team developing #Jami has existed for more than a decade. It used to be called #GNU #Ring and is still part of the GNU project. It originally started as a SIP client called #SLFphone. Given that the routing is serverless and relies on other clients, the design must aim for zero knowledge #E2EE. Auditing the implementation of the encryption, and whether it achieves that, is definitely above my paygrade ;)

I just installed the #Jami (formerly #Ring) app on my Android. I was able to 'export' my Jami account from the GNU/Linux app and I've now got both apps set to start when the system starts. My username, like here, is 'strypey'. If anyone who wants try it out, feel free to message or call me.

@Divert Wow, just realized they have renamed good old #Ring . It's been a while since I last used it, primarily because none of my contacts wanted to install it. I agree. It is truly decentralized.

@rysiek
> I am more interested in BriarSpeaking of full #P2P, have you looked at #Jami (formerly #Ring)? I've successfully made one-to-one voice calls on it, and I believe they're currently working on group calls. Not great for delayed delivery of text messages yet though.

@rw A few family members complain that I can’t see their calendar events, but the biggest annoyance I have with not being a #Facebook user is all the people that say “did you see what cousin so and so just said?” and then stick their phones in my face.
If I wanted to see all that random garbage, I would still have an account.
Yes, but how can we get in touch with you?
Let me count the ways:
* call
* text
* !XMPP
* #Wire
* #Ring / #Jami
* e-mail
* in person
* contact any of my sons, nephews, siblings, my youngest niece, the cousin that lives in TX, or my mom and ask them to forward -

#Jami (formerly #Ring and still a #GNU package) is a #P2P chat app, but up until recently the project has maintained a centralized service for associating human-readable usernames with the unique hash codes the app uses as addresses. That service uses #SmartConstracts on the #Ethereum #blockchain, and they've recently modified it to allow other operators to run nodes, so the name service can be distributed too. Great stuff!
