@geniusmusing I’ll read the article later, but does this mean that #Microsoft is going to assist in overturning the vastly unjust #DMCA law? I mean, #GitHub is significant to developers, but to the outside world, they’re invisible. But if Microsoft as a whole says “DMCA is unfair, unjust, and hurting copyright and patent dependent industries by enabling cartels like #RIAA and #MPAA to freely trample on smaller, independent content producers and the people who just want to enjoy music and movies”, some of those empty-headed congressionals might listen.
I'm not big on #GitHub (even before Microsoft bought them), but my impression of DMCA is that GH did not have any say about closing repositories.
The claims in the DMCA request may have been garbage, but #Microsoft GitHub doesn't get to choose. They have to disable access to those repos or be liable for any further damages the copyright abusing #RIAA claimed.
Appears that the proof of infringing intent was just unit tests meant to ensure that ytdl works. It might be possible for a quality legal team to sue #RIAA and win a declaration of non-infringement. That said, I've not heard of any foundations stepping up and offering legal assistance, so it probably isn't going to happen.
Warning, though. Someone else mentioned that Nitter, Invidio.us, and similar software are probably next. Suggest downloading the repos of any desired "use corpocentric site without logging into said site" software.
@mangeurdenuage The one flaw, IMO, is the #RIAA's claim that circumventing copyright enforcement mechanisms is youtube-dl's primary purpose. Most users that I come across aren't trying to amass a music collection without paying, they are trying to view videos without the JavaScript, ads, and annoyances that YouTube puts in the way.
@schestowitz @jeffcliff I don't understand how violating foreign #copyrights could be an extraditable offense. If they want to go after Kim Dotcom, they need to use #NZ domestic law and completely extract any #US based organizations or legal theories from the case. The whole thing makes #New_Zealand look like they are puppets of foreign-based groups like #RIAA / #MPAA / #FBI.
