@geniusmusing #Ventoy is surprisingly good. I've used it a couple of times already. But recently, I was using it on the new Armbian installation on the #Orange_Pi_5 and ran into an issue:
* It sets up the flash drive using ExFAT as the file system. The instructions say you can change it later, but I never found that option.
* The current set of OS installable programs (Armbian, but I presume Debian / Devuan / Ubuntu / Mint will be the same) does not include a version of mount that handles exfat. That was in the now-deprecated older package.
* Turns out that Ventoy has a binary executable that I was able to copy into my path and use, so now S will receive a USB flash drive with 3 live distros (Debian, Ubuntu Desktop, CentOS Stream) and one direct installer (Ubuntu Server) on it.
I was tempted to add ReactOS, just so she'd see the difference between trying to clone a proprietary system without being sued is versus writing as desired. But I know she's just doing this so she'll have a passing familiarity and be able to check that box on some HR department's screening software's checklist. #ReactOS certainly will not help there. -

@1iceloops123 There is already a #FreeDOS and someone was working on a 32-bits version #FD32 ( FreeDOS32 ). Finally, there's a Windows clone in progress called #ReactOS.
I do not claim that any of them, other than FreeDOS, are actually usable. -

@dwaltiz It sounds like they have networking working in #ReactOS 0.4.12. That’s a huge improvement from a few years ago. -

#ReactOS moved its primary discussion channels to #Mattermost. https://reactos.org/project-news/new-discussion-platform The #IRC rooms are currently bridged to MM rooms.
This happened a few months back, but I just saw it today. -

I don't think the #Fediverse needs to replicate "the Facebook experience" in order to dethrone it. I think mimicing #Facebook leads to #ReactOS syndrome: where you're chasing a moving target that has far more resources than you do, so you get farther behind every year. -

My friend is hooking me up with a new looking Core 2 Duo system. I'm excited. It's gonna be my #Haiku and #ReactOS box.
So much fun.

@kai I haven't tried #ReactOS in 4-5 years, but last time I looked, it couldn't even connect to a network from within a VM. They are chasing a target (compatibility with the latest version of Windows) that moves faster than they can. -

#Gedanken #Meinung #Free-and-Libre -

I installed NT4 in a VM a few years ago, but I wiped it pretty quickly. Mostly because I knew it had been many years since any security patches were released, and it would be too easy to accidentally trigger some online activity that alerts potential attackers to this ancient and unprotected system's presence.
.
I could definitely see #WinNT's influence in #ReactOS. -

Interesting tidbit from the release of #ReactOS 0.4.9:
"It was the #FreeBSD project’s implementation of qsort that helped Pierre bridge some of the last pieces needed to achieve [self hosting]."

@moonman The last time I tried #ReactOS, it still didn't even do networking very well. -

Every year or so I try out #ReactOS to see how it's doing. This year it is much, much better, but still can't run the few apps I throw at it. See you next year... -

@ragazzonoioso I took you up on your dare. I figured the most likely candidate for adware from SF would be Windows, so I installed #ReactOS in a VM, downloaded and installed some .exe filles from #sourceforge, and I admit everything looked clean, vanilla, true to upstream.
There *are* a heck of a lot of ads (even with ublock on) on sourceforge.
Sourceforge like Github, as far as I know, isn't open. But it's a place that once had brand recognition and still does serve some stuff I like.

@veer66 I'm sure #ReactOS will need to be a usable OS before that happens. -

I wonder if #Artemis* can run on #ReactOS**
It probably can, since Artemis's requirements are "practically any computer that runs Windows 98 or newer".This cuts down the cost heavily of making a full bridge with dedicated computers; both because I don't need windows licenses, and because ReactOS hopefully runs nicely on smaller hardware.

Okay, now that I know #Devuan can use the wireless card, I think I'll swap the smallish SSD out and put the HD back in. I only needed to use #Win8.1 for updating certain devices (Garmin GPS satnav, for example), but I'll try to see whether I can use a #ReactOS VM for that. -

#ReactOS on physical hardware? I haven't tried it in at least a decade, but it was even worse than trying to run it in Qemu or VMWare back then.
