Does the #PSVR work with both the #PS4 and #PS5? That's quite an expensive piece of hardware to have it go obsolete so early. -

Too much for a casual player that just wants to try it. I'm pretty sure it would be a "play twice and send to one of the kids" thing, and it isn't priced for that segment. -

I suppose the much less noticable Screen Door Effect from the RGB subpixel arrangement of the PSVR made a big difference for him. It does help that I also showed some of the very best, cleanest looking games on the PSVR, wheras the content he's probably involved with on the Vive is perhaps not up to the same standard.
Had I showed him something like Skyrim, where the visual fidelity is dramatically lowered so the PS4 can keep up, his opinion might have been different. -
The federation's favorite uncle (guizzy@social.guizzyordi.info)'s status on Wednesday, 18-Jul-2018 13:59:24 UTC The federation's favorite uncle #PSVR After that, I had them try Farpoint. Because as much fun as Superhot is, it's a limited gaming concept that will lose its novelty. Farpoint is a good example of a "serious" game genre being enhanced by VR (in Wipeout, the graphics are improved by VR, but not really the gameplay, outside of how the improved distance perception and peripheral vision help). I'm a bit miffed by how quickly and naturally they took to the movement orientation; it took me longer. They were all very good with aiming while hip firing. The mix of having depth perception and a rifle shaped object held and aimed with both arms seems to work very well. Again, lots of fun were had. -

This is a good demo of how immersive it feels to have your full body tracked in VR. Everyone had a huge smile all the way through with this one, from playing and from watching their friend twisting and ducking and falling over trying to avoid bullets. -
The federation's favorite uncle (guizzy@social.guizzyordi.info)'s status on Wednesday, 18-Jul-2018 13:38:14 UTC The federation's favorite uncle #PSVR I then demoed Wipeout, as it's one of what I'd say are the most "perfect" and smooth VR experiences. It's a nice showcase of how good VR can look. Since it's not realistic, it's harder to notice flaws, and since it's a port of last gen games, it's easy to render, so everything is silky smooth and is high resolution even on my modest PS4 Slim.
I heard a couple of "woah" and "oh shit!". It's also a rather easy game, especially on the lower speed classes, so despite it being their first time playing it they could all feel competitive. -
The federation's favorite uncle (guizzy@social.guizzyordi.info)'s status on Wednesday, 18-Jul-2018 13:31:56 UTC The federation's favorite uncle I demoed the #PSVR to 5 of my friends yesterday. I started by showing them some of the "complex" content that can be viewed on Littlstar cinema. All were very impressed by the possibilities. Particularly when one of the actresses leans in and gets really close to the camera for a kiss, they reported that they had the feeling their personal space was being invaded. -

VR might actually save home 3D blurays. The effect is a lot more pleasant, natural and "stable" in VR than I've ever experienced it in the theater. -
The federation's favorite uncle (guizzy@social.guizzyordi.info)'s status on Friday, 06-Jul-2018 19:32:19 UTC The federation's favorite uncle 3 weeks in with the #PSVR, I think Polybius is still my favorite game on it. Rez Infinite and Superhot VR are close behind. Then Farpoint, Wipeout and Bridge Crew.
Skyrim VR is a great excuse to replay this game (I only played through it once before). I simply don't care much for Doom VFR; it's neither great nor bad. I just can't get back into Rigs or Battlezone; both of those still make me queazy and I don't really care enough about the gameplay to push through it. And I really want to be able to play Rec Room more: there's a ton of fun looking games to play there, but it also makes me immediately sick, even with teleport movement.
Bravo Team is still garbage. -
The federation's favorite uncle (guizzy@social.guizzyordi.info)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Jul-2018 16:01:56 UTC The federation's favorite uncle #psvr As for the other end of the spectrum, there's Skyrim VR. Even with the recent patch, it looks last gen, jaggy, low-res (although part of that is likely improved when on PS Pro; I'm on Slim).
Yet, it still looks convincing. Especially in dungeons; they're so atmospheric. The overworld is ok, but it suffers from the graphics quality (or lack thereof) being more apparent.
One of the things I don't like is melee combat. The tracking works well, but the attacks trigger too easily, which means that to attack "efficiently" you need to flail your arms around like it's a bad early Wii game. Magic is great though. -
The federation's favorite uncle (guizzy@social.guizzyordi.info)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Jul-2018 15:44:51 UTC The federation's favorite uncle #psvr One of the things that really surprises me with VR is the ability to impress at both sides of the spectrum of realism. It's the third time I play Rez Infinite, second time I bought it, and it's by far at its best in VR. Aiming is so incredibly natural with the headset; I think I beat my own records first time in VR (all Tera bosses, I think I got a couple of levels at full-100%). And the graphics... They're so perfect and smooth.
I can't wait for Tetris Effect, and hopefully he'll want to relaunch Child of Eden as a VR game. I don't think I even beat it; Kinect was just too annoying to use back then. -
The federation's favorite uncle (guizzy@social.guizzyordi.info)'s status on Friday, 29-Jun-2018 19:42:41 UTC The federation's favorite uncle #PSVR There's also some baffling thing on Doom VFR with the aim controller; the buttons are not remappable, and the weapons wheel is mapped to a button on the side of the gun that is inaccessible without taking one hand off and rotating the gun so the button faces me. And even worse, the weapon wheel itself appears at the butt of the gun, so when I'm pressing the button to bring up the weapon wheel, the weapon wheel is not facing me so I can see well what I'm selecting. It's a small thing, but it's the kind of stuff I have a hard time believing made it through any play testing at all. -
The federation's favorite uncle (guizzy@social.guizzyordi.info)'s status on Friday, 29-Jun-2018 19:38:12 UTC The federation's favorite uncle #PSVR And I retried Doom VFR with the aim controller. I get what many people have been saying about this game on PSVR; neither one of the 3 controller options on the Playstation work well with the game. DS4 feels limiting. Move controllers lack thumbsticks or trackpads so while aiming and shooting works great, movement becomes shit. And Aim controller solves the issue of movement and aiming, but takes you out of presence because you're holding one "two-handed" gun in real life and 2 different things in VR. It could be easily fixed by changing the "gun model" to a centered two-handed gun when using the Aim though. They could also solve movement on the Move controllers by implementing some button combination that enable controller tracking based character rotation, the way Rec Room does it.
As it is, it feels like 3 half-assed controller setups, and it doesn't have to be this way; there are solutions in other games. -
The federation's favorite uncle (guizzy@social.guizzyordi.info)'s status on Friday, 29-Jun-2018 19:32:16 UTC The federation's favorite uncle #PSVR Farpoint, on the other hand, is great. I like my cheesy sci-fi/exploration movies, and this has the right tone for me. I wished the game was greeting you with more interesting enemies at first than spiders though. It did surprise me by not being the shooting gallery reviews made it out to be; the small spiders at the beginning DO act like they are in one (they only attack you from the front; after attacking, they will systematically move back so you can see them before attacking again), true, but from what I read later enemies don't, and act like normal FPS enemies. And there's also PvP.
The game is atmospheric and tracks very well, both the player and the aim controller. Which makes sense, since the game is pretty much made for it; they've put great care in putting your character's hands at the same spots you'll hold the aim. They've even added some really nice touches, like the analog trigger on the aim moves the finger on the in-game gun accordingly. Having an object that corresponds in shape what you're holding in-game really dramatically improve presence, in the same way a HOTAS or steering wheel does.
One thing I DON'T like though is the way they're implementing movement with the thumbsticks on the aim controller. Movement direction feels really weird. I'm not sure exactly why; perhaps because most of the time you're not holding the gun pointed at the camera. I don't know what the ideal movement solution is, but I don't think what they have in Farpoint is it yet. When not pointing it forwards, I also have a hard time holding the gun at an angle that doesn't make it look like my character has broken wrists. The issue being that the character is wearing a spacesuit, so he can't hold the gun to his body the way I naturally do in real life. -
The federation's favorite uncle (guizzy@social.guizzyordi.info)'s status on Friday, 29-Jun-2018 19:14:05 UTC The federation's favorite uncle #PSVR Bravo Team is trash. Like; really, really bad. I don't mind the cover to cover nature of the game; it could be fun if it were a good "lightgun" style game. But the guns are unsatisfying as fuck. The AI is shit...
It's also a bad VR game on top of being a bad game. It keeps pulling you out of your character when you move between covers. Another aspect it keeps breaking is that for VR to work in games where you're playing a person, your body needs to be mapped one-to-one with your character in-game, or at least be close enough. If it doesn't then at least it needs to keep both your in-game character and real life position neutral enough that you don't notice that it's not being tracked. Bravo Team has you by default crouching, then you push a button to pop out of cover. This doesn't work; it just doesn't. You're standing, yet your character is crouched, with your head 3 feet from the ground; you don't feel like you're the character at all. -

The federation's favorite uncle (guizzy@social.guizzyordi.info)'s status on Tuesday, 19-Jun-2018 13:56:00 UTC The federation's favorite uncle #psvr I need to be careful with VR, I might have been using it a bit too much, and now I'm having weird flashes during the day.
It mostly happens when I stare at a screen (computer, phone) for long enough that the world around the screen looks blurry. It like as if that blurriness makes my brain panic and ask for a second "blurriness... wait! Is this VR?". To which it quickly answers "oh, of course not!", but not before a flash of concern. -
