tobias: I had a nice evening yesterday at the offline at the KDE Plasma 6 release party https://kde.org/announcements/megarelease/6/. Guess the most important thing is, that the cube and wobbly windows are back π₯°https://kde.org/announcements/megarelease/6/cube.webmNot that I really used it in the past, but I remember having it active during some Linux presentations and it was always an eye-catcher to have to show off the capabilities of this other OS that is for free and runs on old hardware. Thanks for the invitation @KDE Eco #FreeSorftware #FLOSS #KDE #KDEPlasma #berlin @offline

lnxw48a1: After @geniusmusing@nu.federati.net mentioned that #LinuxMint no longer offered a #KDE desktop, I had to visit the site and see for myself. Heβs right. I did see an article fon https://blog.linuxmint.com/ from 2016 that was talking about their #Kubuntu -derived KDE version, so it vanished within the past five years. I detest #GNOME and barely tolerate many of the GNOME2 reboot desktops such as Cinnamon, so this is a big move to alienate people who want a useful and attractive desktop environment (and related applications that actually work).

strypey: @Blort > #PostmarketOS - isn't this more just a low level base? Does it actually have userland apps?I don't know much about this project yet. But my impression is their goal is get a standard GNU/Linux base system running on an Android device, which can then be used with #GNOME, #KDE, or any other DE that has a touchscreen version. I presume they will supply ready-to-use ROMs with these for each device they liberate.

blort: Kudos to @cwebber and @apconf for putting the #ActivitypubConference (#apconf) videos online on #Peertube.Peertube already gives us a great alternative to #YouTube, but it's problem is a lack of viewers, because of the lack of content uploaded to the platform (& being new). That's why it's great to see #Apconf help break the catch 22 by sharing their videos at:https://conf.tube/accounts/apconf/videosHere's hoping we see other conferences follow their lead! (#kde #gnome etc. I'm looking at you!)

blort: I wonder if I'm the only one who ever considered that #Tusky is the #Gnome of the #Fediverse client world, while #Fedilab is #KDE.I love them both. strypey: @CharredStencil @mike #Sandstorm was another approach with the same goal, making installing and configuring apps on remote servers as easy as doing the same thing on a modern desktop or mobile OS. I've heard it suggested that #GNU #Guix could also be used to achieve that goal. I suspect this field is about where GNU/Linux distros were around the time #KDE and #GNOME came out.

strypey: I'd love to see the functionality of #SyncThing integrated into file managers like #Files (#GNOME), #Dolphin (#KDE), #Caja (in #Mate). Maybe with plug-ins? Flipping back and forth between the folder representations in the SyncThing GUI and the file manager can get really confusing and makes for an awkward #UX.

strypey: @Scarabeater @frickhaditcoming if you like #KDE, #Cinnamon might be more your speed. #Mate is intended more for older or less powerful hardware, or people who want to use a minimal DE and save their processing power for the apps they run on it. Both are forks (?) of #GNOME 2 which were started by the #Mint distro when GNOME 3 came out, and massively increased the resource footprint of GNOME (mostly for Ubuntu's benefit).

lnxw48a1: So far, none of the upgrade paths in that page have worked. Iβm going to download the installer for the #Kubuntu 18.04 LTS later today. I may try #Xubuntu with a lot of #KDE programs. . I would consider going back to #Mageia, if theyβve fixed an issue I had.

johnnynull: @null The critique that it looks like something plastic to appeal to children is spot-on. Agreed that it looks less vomit-inducing when tweaked. I've done this several times. There are additional issues. The "leave no cycles to do actual work" attitude. The "fix it yourself or don't bug us about it" attitude. The shit apps that crash, won't open, can't open their own files, or lose your data. Β I've said it before and I still stand by it: If #KDE was the only #Linux DE I'd return to #Windows.
