#NOAA / #NWS issuing red flag / fire weather warnings for a fat diagonal stripe across E and SE #Kansas, W and SW #Missouri. I don't get alerts for #OK or #AR, but I presume that they don't stop at the state line.
Don't burn the place down before I get back.

Winding down my time in #Missouri. It looks like I'll get home for a week or two at the end of this month before I'm off to the next assignment. I was offered a chance to go directly to a one-month #Kansas, but it would have meant not getting home between assignments.
Happy! And sad, because when I'm not in this part of the country, I don't get to visit #GD1 and #GD2.

@harmlessgryphon @xj9 @dwmatiz @benis Or, in some states, the state legislature. There were some woefully underserved municipalities in #Kansas and other states that started to develop their own broadband networks, only to have the incumbent operators buy enough legislators to block them. (By the way, federal funds go to build high speed rural networks, but unsurprisingly, after receiving payment, few such networks ever get built.)

@awg Referring back to https://shitposter.club/notice/5843676 ... #sonOne's father in law (in eastern #Kansas) says the local farmers sometimes lose a calf to something in the cat family. Whatever animal it is, it is large enough to carry the carcass up into a tree.

@jeffcliff @jeffclif@quitter.se When I was working in Salina, #Kansas, every vehicle with an under-30 driver was playing rap music, even though I probably only saw about 20 dark-skinned people.

Looks like #Kansas and #Missouri had a stormy night. Looking at my phone, I see 43 messages from #NOAA / #NWS since I went to bed last night. This will be followed by warnings about (hopefully minor) flooding over the next few days.
-
#NOAA / #NWS warning of severe #t-storms, with 60MPH winds, hail, flooding for the #Kansas side of the Kansas City metro. These things generally move East or Northeast, so the whole metro area should be alert.
-
#NOAA / #NWS issuing severe #t-storm warning for #Kansas City area. Trained spotters report tennis ball size hail, 60MPH gusts near Paola, #KS, heading SE toward #MO.
-
With all the severe weather alerts I'm receiving from #Kansas and #Missouri, I need to call #sonOne for a status report.

I think #NOAA / #NWS can greatly improve their text / e-mail alerts.
(1) Offer specific metro areas or individual counties. No freeform personalized sign-ups.
(2) Consolidate. If there is flooding expected on multiple rivers / streams in an area, put them all into ONE alert, with timed predictions. Same for tornadoes and other events. "Minor flooding just SE of Lawrence KS beginning at 3PM, major flooding near KCI airport at 4PM..."
(3) Consolidate. Add updates to the same web page as the original alert. When sending original alerts, say "check this page for updated info on this event" ... so no more need for continued SMS messages. Same for "alert cancelled" ... it is rare that these require separate messages. Just update the page, so recipients can check and see that the event is cancelled.
(4) Consolidate. If you've already declared a watch, place warnings on the same web page. But because a warning means danger is imminent, you may still send a separate SMS and e-mail message about it. This does not mean that someone should receive 40 separate warnings as a storm crosses the #Kansas City metro ( #kcks #kcmo ). See (2) above.

Looks like lots of #t-storm action in SE #Kansas, SW #Missouri, and neighboring areas of #Oklahoma and #Arkansas. #NOAA / #NWS alerts dinging my phone incessantly. Hail, straight-line winds, heavy rain, minor flooding expected until 23:00 US-Central.

Fortunately, #sonOne's area of #Kansas doesn't seem to have had any fires. Still under #NOAA / #NWS warnings, though.
