I should also point out that I am in agreement with some points. From what I've read, many #VPN companies keep logs ... which may contain enough information to identify specific customers. Many of them have poor security (that is, there have been reports that such logs escape company control).
The companies could be subjected to government pressure.
I haven't seen any reports yet, but I am just waiting to hear about a VPN company being hit by #ransomware. What would they trade in order to get their infrastructure back?
To be clear, all of these things are possible with your #ISP also. In particular, your ISP is very likely to surrender you to copyright strike requests.
"The Zenzeleni Networks project – Zenzeleni means “do it yourself” in isiXhosa, the Eastern Cape’s most prevalent language – is, as far as we’re aware, South Africa’s first and only Internet Service Provider (#ISP) that’s owned and run by a rural #cooperative. Just like any ISP, Zenzeleni installs and maintains telecommunications infrastructure and also sells telecommunications services like voice and data."
Reminder: You should be using your upload bandwidth. If you're not, now's the time to do so. Seed some (legal) torrents, rock an IPFS node, give Tor some love.
#ISP had been bought out by another who didn't even have an email address or phone number for me. So when my maxed out credit card got charged, I was cut off without notice. Customer support line only operates during office hours. Grr.
My #ISP is #BSNL, run by the Indian government. Everybody bitches about their service (sometimes without sufficient cause). But, their prices are relatively cheap and they provide static IP for 2000 INR (approx 33 USD) per year. My broadband plan costs about 1200 INR (approx 20 USD) per month.
Very sad that #riseup is using #Spamhaus. They also verify your reverse DNS entry, which my ISP won't set up for me. Last month, I raised this issue with riseup at https://user.riseup.net/ticket/810076/arunisaac@systemreboot.net , but there has been no response. A group that claims to be working for social change should really do better. I expected more from them. Is there some better way of contacting them than that ticket I raised?
