Mark just texted to tell me The Weather Channel says #Hurricane #Ida is still a Category 2 hurricane 11-12 hours after its core made landfall.
This is probably one of the strongest storms in recent memory.
-
@geniusmusing Yeah, I expect that #Hurricane #Ida will have nearly every federal agency involved in responding, the way Puerto Rico did after Hurricane #Maria. Co-workers are already trying to guess who gets sent to #LA and who goes to #MS or even #TN.
-
Outer tropical storm force winds from #Hurricane #Ida are probably already starting to come onshore in #Louisiana. It is 01:05 CDT, 2021-AUG-29 ... sixteen years to the day after Hurricane #Katrina came onshore. Ida is a Category 3 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 115MPH.
-
Meanwhile in the Pacific, #Hurricane #Nora now expected to turn NE and break up over land. #AZ and #NM could get some rain from the remnants of the storm.
It is moving slower than #Ida, so this desert rainfall could be a week away from now.
-
#TD-10 forms in the Atlantic. Expected to stay in the open ocean and not threaten land.
Meanwhile, #Hurricane #Ida is still headed for the US Gulf Coast ( most likely #Louisiana ). Currently 100MPH winds, moving NW at 16MPH. Storm surge estimate: up to 7-11 feet of seawater above normally dry ground.

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ #hurricane #Ida makes landfall on #Cuba’s Isle of Youth. Maximum sustained winds 75MPH. Heavy rain. Storm surge.

#NOAA / #NHC #TropStorm #Elsa briefly reached #hurricane status again off shore of Tampa Bay, but is now a tropical storm again. Storm surge, tornadoes, wind and rain all expected across the US Southeast over the next few days.
If you're in #FL, #GA, #SC, #NC, #AL it is probably too late to do any additional preparation. Just try to ride it out.
-
#NOAA / #NHC: #Hurricane #Elsa now a #TropStorm, currently affecting #Haiti and the #Dominican_Republic, expected to pass near #Jamaica before hitting #Cuba.
Still expected to affect #Florida between Monday night and Wednesday morning. If you're in the Caribbean or #FL, get ready now.

Actuall, their map says tropical storm, but headline text says #Hurricane #Eta. Either way, #FL getting hit today and tomorrow.
-
It looks like the center of #Hurricane #Zeta is moving onshore near New Orleans, #LA, right about now. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ I haven't seen any news stories about evacuations, but there must be. I don't know how high the storm surge is, but a high surge can ride inland for a few miles, meaning that normally dry land temporarily becomes part of the ocean.
-
#NOAA / #NHC #Hurricane #Zeta nearing the northern Gulf Coast. The map on https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ still looks like New Orleans #LA is in or near the likely direct impact zone.

Category 3 #Hurricane #Epsilon bringing tropical storm conditions to #Bermuda. Wind speeds over 115MPH 185km/h in some spots, with higher gusts.
-
#NOAA / #NHC says #hurricane #marie in the eastern Pacific is not expected to endanger land. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
-
#TropStorm #Beta nearing landfall in #TX; #hurricane #Teddy passing #Bermuda, now heading for Atlantic #Canada. #NOAA / #NHC https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
-
#NOAA / #NWS #TD22 in the Gulf of Mexico is now #TropStorm #Beta ... expected to soak parts of #MX, #TX, #LA; #Hurricane #Teddy expected to pass East of #Bermuda, then swing across #Canada's Maritime Provinces

Mark told me that the news showed quite a bit of damage in #AL from #Hurricane #Sally. I hope there are no chemical plants in that area. There were a few days of "shelter in place" in #LA after a recent hurricane caused a fire at such a plant.
-
Glanced at PowerOutage.us ... looks like Cameron Parish, #LA, is still about 85% without power. Overall, it looks like 45% of the state is out. Most is due to #hurricane #Laura that went through the state a couple of weeks back.
There's an important caveat in that PowerOutage does not track all of the state's electric providers, so its figures could be high OR low.
-
#Hurricane #Laura has sustained wind speeds of 150-155MPH. We may learn after the fact that it was indeed a Category 5.
Expecting ocean water to be up to 20 feet above normally dry ground and for the water to reach up to 30 miles inland.
This is probably one of the 10 biggest storms to strike the Continental US since tracking and measurement began.
