He seems to be talking about the general concepts of #FreeSoftware, #copyleft, the #GPL and #OpenSource, and how the #Anti996 license relates to all this. "Why any software movement will fail", referencing #RichardStallman, not sure what the proposition is here. He moves on to a critique of #DataAsLabour, and the proposition that #disintermedia, via decentralized tech like #IPFS and #BitCoin, will allow users to monetize their own data directly, rather than mediators capturing that value.
Most times I refer to #GPL, without version. Doesn't matter to me in most contexts.
Okay: I *think* there are multiple #BSD licenses, with variable clauses. Is it safe to refer to all of them as BSD, without qualifier? When is it important?
Big things happening at #QOTO I wanted to update everyone on.
So as most of you know I had a year long back injury that put a lot of QOTO plans on hold. But I've been healed and working on bringing much of that vision to reality.
As of a few weeks ago a few close friends and fellow engineers wanted to join the team. I am currently sitting with 3 other new engineers and we are working on bringing up several instances including peertube, nextcloud, gitlab, discourse, and of course a newer version of QOTO. A full collaboration suite for others in STEM and the open-source community. All for free to its users.
This launch will coincide with several of my other projects many of you follow including protowaffle, ROES, Graphactor, Aparapi, Ferma and many others. We will host all the source on QOTO as well as make it the source for future software announcements related to those products.
GPL is a hostage negotiation, or at best barter. I'll give you my code if you give me yours. There is nothing "free" about it in my mind.
MIT/BSD/Apache is true freedom "You can have my code, no strings attached, do what you want with it, just promise you will tell people it is open-source and who wrote it!"
@FarhanYusufzai I think this argument fails to distinguish between the GNU *tools* and the GNU *Project*. It's the GNU Project that's referred to when we say "GNU/Linux". #GNOME is part of the GNU Project. The GNU #GPL is part of the GNU Project. The vision that inspired Linus to start working on his kernel was the GNU Project vision. That's why I say there would be no Linux without GNU. https://fossbytes.com/linus-torvaldss-famous-email-first-linux-announcement/
The situation in NZGOAL Software Edition is somewhat better. Public service agencies are advised to license any modifications to an existing codebase under the license the upstream codebase uses, even when they're not legally obliged to (ie a non-copyleft license). When licensing new software, they're advised to use either #GPL (v3+) or "#MIT", and to consider #LGPL or #AGPL where appropriate.
@Ajz > Google likes to track you much more than Apple does.
Even if you're right (and I'm sceptical), that's not nearly as important as how much control either of these companies has over the hardware of the device and the software on it. Apple = total control, right down to banning apps with #GPL code from their app store. No #FDroid on #iThings. This is the total opposite of #SoftwareFreedom.
@h sure, but the #GPL is a defensive tool. It's function is not to enforce compliance with the #FourFreedom values within the software freedom movement, but rather as a preventative measure against the work of free code hackers being abused by anti-social outsiders. @mike_hales@KevinCarson1@mayel@matslats
> Gnome's help is not unix > fontana, imo (biased), it's almost universally true that #gplv3 makes any given #gpl right clearly than #gplv2. But we're debating v2 > Juggling video codecs, resolutions, aspect ratios, pixel aspect ratios and bitrates in my hand > Why don't i have no privacy
I actually decided since then to make my theme's CC0, as that makes everything easier for me, but I like the #GPL for #gohugo themes. I'm not sure I see the issue you are having with that theme component. I use plugins and themes under the GPL for WordPress, and this question doesn't come up. Why so for a Hugo template? ^_^
