After @geniusmusing mentioned that #LinuxMint no longer offered a #KDE desktop, I had to visit the site and see for myself. Heโs right.
I did see an article fon https://blog.linuxmint.com/ from 2016 that was talking about their #Kubuntu -derived KDE version, so it vanished within the past five years.
I detest #GNOME and barely tolerate many of the GNOME2 reboot desktops such as Cinnamon, so this is a big move to alienate people who want a useful and attractive desktop environment (and related applications that actually work).
#GNOME settles patent suit, wins non-enforcement agreement for all software issued under OSI approved licenses. https://nu.federati.net/url/275073 [thenewstack io]
@mala I've been using #Mate since it replaced #GNOME Fallback as the default desktop for #Trisquel. I'm very happy with it, even on a 10 year old 32-bit netbook bought with XP on it. I shudder to think what it would be like trying to run a newer Windows OS on it. Without desktop GNU/Linux, I'd probably have to buy a newer 2nd hand laptop every couple of years to have a useable PC.
#Ubuntu 19.10 is out! #GNOME takes a patent troll to court, Disney+ doesn't know how to #Linux, and a simple tool for calibrating your monitor. Shownotes & podcast http://bit.ly/LWDW193
@Blort > #PostmarketOS - isn't this more just a low level base? Does it actually have userland apps?
I don't know much about this project yet. But my impression is their goal is get a standard GNU/Linux base system running on an Android device, which can then be used with #GNOME, #KDE, or any other DE that has a touchscreen version. I presume they will supply ready-to-use ROMs with these for each device they liberate.
Peertube already gives us a great alternative to #YouTube, but it's problem is a lack of viewers, because of the lack of content uploaded to the platform (& being new).
That's why it's great to see #Apconf help break the catch 22 by sharing their videos at:
I love them both. One has a beautifully simple, clean, gets-out-of-your-way interface. One is infinitely customizable and full of features to tweak that you never even realized you wanted!
@AesAthena yup, you can (in theory) use any DE (Desktop Environment) on any GNU/Linux distro. But it's better to pick the DE you want to use, and pick a distro that uses it a the default. If you have a reasonably recent computer, #GNOME will probably work for you, but I find #Mate is great for older computers, and still offers a UX that will feel reasonably familiar to longtime Windows users.
@CharredStencil@mike#Sandstorm was another approach with the same goal, making installing and configuring apps on remote servers as easy as doing the same thing on a modern desktop or mobile OS. I've heard it suggested that #GNU#Guix could also be used to achieve that goal. I suspect this field is about where GNU/Linux distros were around the time #KDE and #GNOME came out.
I'd love to see the functionality of #SyncThing integrated into file managers like #Files (#GNOME), #Dolphin (#KDE), #Caja (in #Mate). Maybe with plug-ins? Flipping back and forth between the folder representations in the SyncThing GUI and the file manager can get really confusing and makes for an awkward #UX.
