Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Friday, 22-Nov-2019 05:04:07 UTC Strypey @lightweight I suspect that in most cases, "enterprise" editions are mostly just their specific server configs anyway, along with other stuff that wouldn't be inappropriate or useless to publish. Anything in #GitLab that the self-hosting community actually has a need for tends to get moved to the "#FOSS" edition once someone makes a case for it.

My concern is that forking applications and removing the maintainers branding without talking to them first, doesn't really seem like "Working well with upstream", even if it's within the letter of the GPL etc. Eg. The maintainer of #Tusky @ConnyDuck didn't seem particularly thrilled at how you worked "with" them.#FOSS is all about collaboration and community.

The Human (blort@social.tchncs.de)'s status on Sunday, 28-Jul-2019 03:51:22 UTC The Human If you run your own #Nextcloud server, answer this:
Do you have a distributed, #encrypted, automatic, offsite, free #backup solution?
How amazing would it be to install a Nextcloud app and automatically have all your data encrypted, backed up around the world, on other Nextcloud installs rather than some mega-corp, for no cost beyond sharing some of your unused storage space?
Please help make this happen, by boosting and supporting this issue now:

I'm reminded again how the best #FOSS software isn't made by the most skilful coder, or by the most advanced language... but by the most engaged community.

Commodore Sixty Bore (sikkdays@ourempty.pub)'s status on Tuesday, 23-Jul-2019 21:34:24 UTC Commodore Sixty Bore I think #FOSS is strongest when it is tools. Common tools, like a hammer or screwdriver have a number of uses. They are rarely "upgraded" or given additional "features."
When #OpenSource tries to mimic commercial, closed software it brings those unfortunate tropes. The idea of "more" seeps in.

Michael Downey 🚩 (downey@floss.social)'s status on Monday, 22-Jul-2019 18:07:20 UTC Michael Downey 🚩 So #GitLab Pages has finally rolled out their automatic #LetsEncrypt integration for hosted web sites. It's quite painless and automatically renews certs. So glad that I don't have to manually do this or maintain some brittle CI-based scripts anymore.
If you've got a GL-hosted site, take the next 90 seconds and go secure it!

OMG yes. A #FOSS #Duolingo would be amazing. I think it's worth mentioning though that part of what makes Duolingo so effective is that it isn't just flash cards. It's also the algorithm that tracks reach users success rate of using each individual word and grammar structure, combines that with spaced reinforcement (repeating the use of specific words in questions over increasing periods of time).
