    https://500ish.com/mastodon-brought-a-protocol-to-a-product-fight-ba9fda767c6a

#Medium link; don't be surprised if it does weird things before showing you the article.

"Mastodon brought a protocol to a product fight"

    > Yes, yes, the network is under immense strain as people flee the Elon strain infecting Twitter. But come on, there are folks who really believe this is going to replace, or even stand alongside Twitter, as a massively scaled social network? I call bullshit. While it’s impressive that millions of users have apparently given Mastodon a try, the product is far too slapdash and clunky to keep folks engaged. A lump of coal.

No, it isn't meant to be a #Twitter replacement. Keep your Twitter account until you no longer want it--or the company closes and the site shuts down--you can use Mastodon alongside Twitter.

And the #Fediverse networks are much more than just #Mastodon. Don't think you have experienced the network and all it has to offer if all you've done is briefly tried to use Mastodon, because you haven't experienced it.

    > I’ve somehow avoided signing up for the service up until now. Largely because signing up was and is so comically obtuse — pick your server everyone, hope you choose wisely!

Have you not used e-mail? It works the same way. You pick a server, such as Gmail or Outlook dot com, and sign up. Please tell me you realize that the people you communicate with are not all on the same e-mail service that you use.

    > But, but, it’s not a product, it’s a protocol. Yeah, that’s a nice thing to say. And to believe in. But I truly believe the ship has sadly sailed for such idealism in this space. Jack Dorsey can talk about how this should have been what Twitter was from the get go until he’s bluesky in the face. It’s just not going to happen. And he’s more to blame for that than most everyone else. As is he for the Elon element of this current equation. But that’s a different story.

Okay, so how about this story: Twitter has only been profitable two or three years of its entire history. Since it started, it has existed by burning through investors' funds. Eventually, with or without Elon Musk's ownership, that runs out. Without such funding, their corporate-centralized ( #corpocentric ) model cannot exist very long. And same for their centralized competitors, such as Post.news, Gab, Parler, and so on. What is left is either #federated or #peer-to-peer approaches, where no single entity is responsible for funding and managing the entire network. So whether it is the #Fediverse ( with #ActivityPub and #OStatus and their successors ) & the Federation ( with #Diaspora ) or #Bluesky, or #Twister, or #NOSTR, the eventual future of #socnets is #decentralized, if not entirely peer-to-peer unless a national government takes over Facebook and Twitter in order to provide effectively unlimited resources. It is the protocol that makes it possible for thousands or millions of instances to displace and replace one big centralized instance.

One thing about this surge of people migrating from #Twitter to the #Fediverse is that people who gave up on #federated #socnets years ago and solely used #corpocentric platforms are now coming back.

Thus, I get announcements about people I knew from #Tent (thanks to fellow former Tentler @bthall) along with news about people from #Identi.ca and other #StatusNet and #Pump.io instances returning.

@simsa04 It's good to see that #Loomio is still around. #Diaspora used to use Loomio many years ago. (They also used either #GetSatisfaction or #UserVoice ... which are more like user-to-user support communities, and I think they used #Convore until it closed also.)

I wish I'd had the time and focus to document everything I've seen in the #federated #socnet space. I could probably write a book by now.

@simsa04 @geniusmusing If they did, their instance(s) would rapidly become the largest. They would be the “center of gravity” that endangers the health of every #federated network in which they appear.

However, I think that, freed from the distraction of #Musk and the public attention of #Twitter, they would rather focus on proving that a network built upon their #AT_Protocol is viable.

I've never played #Minecraft - Is this #Federated software? Is it #FreeSoftware? If so, how can Microsoft control what's happening on someone's private server? Even if such code existed in a #FreeSoftware application, I would have thought there'd be a fork that eliminates that external control. It's time for that now.

But if #Minecraft isn't #FreeSoftware aka Free/Libre Open Source Software, then I really have no sympathies for people running or using it...

An article I recently read talked about the copyright battles of the late 1990s as instructive to what #decentralized, #federated and #peer-to-peer networks will face if and when we become threatening to the big #corpocentric networks. I think it is something we need to think about.

Unfortunately, some parts of the #Fediverse (primarily, but not exclusively #Mastodon) have marketed themselves with promises of privacy, control, immunity from recourse, and personal security that none of these networks (nor the protocols they use) were ever designed to provide. The article looked at that as failure, instead of recognizing it for what it was: marketing & advertising puffery.

@sim In other words, we often intentionally try to look like the #corpocentric networks and hide the things that make this one different. Then we are caught off-guard when users (especially new users, but sometimes people who have been around for a year or two) show ignorance about the fundamental differences inherent a #federated network. We need to make it clear, from the beginning, that this is NOT really a clone of Twitter or Facebook, but something far different.

This is worth a read. This person has spent some time thinking about these issues. I'm not saying his/her conclusions are "the right" conclusions or that he/she has discovered all the potential issues. But when we discuss these topics, we need to have a (shared) starting point, where everyone understands what particular terms mean.

A few months ago, I wrote this blog post: http://ajroach42.com/tech-for-the-future/

It's just a big list of tech that runs through a similar space ( #decentralized #federated #encrypted #peer2peer stuff), things that might be able to work together.

I'm still sitting in this headspace, but I haven't managed to figure out what to do about it.

    .
I still think that if they feel persecuted, they should be looking at building a #peer-to-peer instead of a #federated network. The "censorship resistance" they seek just isn't here.
    .
(And anyone in the Fediverse that thinks about their "wolf in sheep's clothing" plan should be rightly concerned that this will set a precedent for Apple & Google to require blocks based on their vague and changing standards in the future)

@sean I was just looking at #SoLiD (I assume that is the preferred casing?) yesterday, wondering whether it would be worth trying to host a pod. Interesting that they kyped the name, but don’t seem to share any protocols with #Diaspora or any other #federated socnet.

That's a shame. I've been saying for the longest time that the #federated #FOSS scene needs to address #onlinedating.

It's growing rapidly, has already pretty much become the defacto way that people meet partners in many places, and people share far more intimate personal, psychological information than even places like #Facebook.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to code anything, although I'd be happy to share graphic design / marketing skills...

Certain "folk" came to the #fediverse after their centralized home was dropped again by its hoster because it allowed the kind of content they post. Then they get angry about being kicked off of various instances here. Well instead of expecting someone else to take the risk, they should host their own #federated #socnet instance or use a #P2P platform.

@geniusmusing #Wire is currently not #federated (though the client and possibly the server are now FOSS), but it offers an easy noob-friendly encrypted chat. Out of the ones I’ve tried, this is the one that I’ve been able to get some of my family members to use. (Some of them also used #Ring, but there were some problems with a version upgrade forcing people to re-request connection to their contacts, and none of my contacts made it past that.)
