European Copyright Directive implementation begins
Last week the Directive on #Copyright in the Digital Single Market was published in the Official Journal of the European Union, formally kicking off the implementation phase in which the Directive will be transposed into the national laws of the #EU Member States. EU countries will have until 7 June 2021 to adopt the provisions laid down in the directive into their respective copyright laws.
@alexl don't get me wrong, I'm no uncritical fan of the #EU. There are many legitimate criticisms of its current "neoliberal" shape. But it's a #federation, it's taken that shape because it's member governments were and are still mired in "neoliberalist" assumptions. That doesn't mean important #PublicInterest threat fires can't be put out at EU level, and fighting them there avoids from having to fight the same fires over and over in multiple countries. @bob
"Who's got a Samsung charger?" used to be my slogan in the Good Ole Days.
The microUSB and now USB-C standarization - we largely have the #EU to thank for that. And I happen to know how insanely hard it was to push it through against the immense lobbying.
@kaikatsu Ok. The other day I posted a link to an #ActOut podcast discussing the #NewsGuard soft censorship system run by US neo-cons. Is #EUnomia the #EU version of the same thing?
What the hell is going on? For anyone outside the UK who doesn't understand what the hell is going on here at the moment, let me put this in terms that any sane person should be able to understand:
#EU #EuParl #JuliaReda #Piraten #Politik
Reading the wonderful "Ours to Hack and to Own" I discovered that the #EU invested €60mil into a complete suite of #FOSS tools meant to enable and empower digital and distributed democracy.
