Please write to #ICANN and the US #InternetSociety expressing your support for the .org domain to be managed by a #cooperative owned by its users, not sold off to a private company (Ethos) as proposed by the #InternetSociety.
"... some nonprofits ... have rallied behind a counterproposal, calling for a nonprofit #cooperative, owned by the organizations with .org domain names, to take over registry operations ... The cooperative, called the Cooperative Corporation of dot-org Registrants, has articles of incorporation that ban it from selling data, aiding in censorship, or raising prices beyond the current ratio to the cost of operations." - #StevenMelendez https://www.fastcompany.com/90454827/a-symbol-of-public-good-on-the-internet-is-under-attack
Placing all the "IP" of a #SocialEnterprise or #cooperative under libre licenses at it's inception is one way to reduce it's attractiveness to capitalists, but that doesn't help if there's no other way to keep their people securely employed.
"A $7 million recycling plant [will] be built in #Auckland by Australian packaging company #PactGroup, with a $3 million subsidy from the Government's #WasteMinimizationFund."
Good that this fund is available. But it's a shame when these sorts of public funds are used to give #CorporateWelfare to investors in established companies. They can help to bootstrap new #cooperative and #SocialEnterprise operations, run with more input from their workers, and the communities they operate in.
"we create free and open-source, #cooperative alternatives to the proprietary walled garden systems, and if necessary take a black market approach to do as much of it as possible outside the state’s surveillance. We salt the corporate ride-sharing services, #Wobbly-style, with drivers who will agitate and organize against #Uber and #Lyft, and fight to reduce the share of their labor-product the corporations skim off the top." - #KevinCarson https://c4ss.org/content/27244
I need to set up a website for a #comedy podcast I'm doing with an old friend and collaborator. I'm thinking of just using an off-the-shelf service like #Wordpress.com or #Squarespace, to keep it simple. But if there's a #cooperative doing something like this, using only #FreeCode software, at a similar price, I'd rather support them than lease a #VPS and spend hours doing my own sysadmin.
Does anyone know of a #podcast hosting service that's run cooperatively, whether as a formal #cooperative or some kind of democratically managed #SocialEnterprise? Bonus points for using only #FreeCode software, or at least not subjecting visitors to their website(s) to non-free Javascript.
@tshrinivasan You can check the status of instances from here https://instances.social/ and as @prassee suggests, I also support we start the first mastodon instance in India and we shall reach out to first the FOSS communities, Regional communities like writers, poets in tamil and bring them into it. But like https://social.coop we should look at managing and funding the platform as a #cooperative
The kind of drama happening now (ie. devs ignoring specific requests put forth by some users) is the natural outcome of the benevolent dictatorship model and proves that, no matter how decent, good and caring a person is when starting a massive FOSS project, they are ALL bound to reach the "I make the rules" stage, because that's the nature of human beings when exposed to massive stress.
