@technowix I'm always reminded of what a good job you've done in laying the foundation for a nice, #comfe atmosphere on your instance -- a pleasant culture quite unique from both #masto and even #gs.
coming from a "smug" user, I guess it is not high praise. but thank you all the same!

the beaches aren't as nice as Kobuleti's, but Makhinjauri is actually a pretty #comfe place to chill in the off-season. the botanical garden there is also amazing ...
-
@ajr sounds #comfe :-)
-
@ginbe yes! .de was hardly a bad instance, but it's #comfe here. https://gs.smuglo.li/attachment/908131

@kfist @ajr I find myself sometimes reflecting on how certain pros pursue more "serious" careers after already finding themselves in a more satisfying (albeit, usually less lucrative) "sweet spot" in their professional development. I don't judge the choices they made. (for some, it wasn't a choice at all -- they weren't making enough to live on.) but I decided years ago to do everything I could to find my #comfe niche and milk it for all it was worth, even it meant forgoing better pay, "advancement," and otherwise being taken more "seriously" by peers. and when I find myself in some difficulty, it's almost always because I deviated from this course I set for myself in some way not because I followed it -- all things considered, I consider myself fortunate.

I used to regularly come chill at a colleague's apartment in a commieblock building in downtown Tbilisi. I must admit it was somewhat #comfe despite its austerity, rather unlike many structures of its kind. the concrete lended excellent sound isolation between most of its occupants, so it felt more private than it was. and the building's elevator had ceased functioning for decades -- its shaft was now a make-shift rubbish heap for decrepit furniture and empty booze bottles-- but I appreciated the daily workout of going up and down thirteen flights of steps.
his porch actually had a terrific view, and remains one of my favourite places I've ever spaced out in thought with a cigarette and a generous glass of vodka in hand. its pitch was a little disconcerting, though -- pens could roll easily and become lawn darts for pedestrians passing below if you weren't careful.
the only really annoying aspect of my colleague's place was the bath. water had to be emptied out of the tub through the floor, or the occupant below us would get our drain water coming through their ceiling. (I only did this once, swear ... oops.)
still, all things considered, would stay there again ... 4 out of 5 stars. #travel #nostalgia

once when I was broke and still living with my parents, my computer died. and the new one I tried assembling had serious bugs in the BIOS that made it an unreliable paperweight -- I hadn't income to buy the parts to make a working computer.
bloodied, thoroughly fed-up, but unbowed, I setup a Kaypro 2X with a 1200 baud hayes smartmodem (both dumpster retrieves), decked it out with a portable CD player and a pair of computer speakers, and spent the next year dialing into my ISP's shell account (netbsd!) for email, usenet, IRC, etc. I could safely say I was easily running the worst computer of anyone I chatted with on IRC at the time. but it was strangely #comfe.
I'm not even sure why I'm relating this story tbh. those were weird times in my life.

@roka in another forum some people were railing on why I wasn't running a "proper" wm or DE. I've gotten super #comfe with cwm. no way I'm switching.
-
@skoll lol, "spoiled." might as well be #comfe, if all else fails.
correction: I'm used to elvis, actually (another vi knock-off), but switched to nvi. the difference is not huge, but I'm liking it much better overall.
-
@clacke @skoll lynx has some fun elements it utilizes if present in a document's HEAD that make for really #comfe navigation between pages. for program documentation, it isn't a bad alternative to info or man.

the weather is now nearly suitable for my ushanka. #comfe
-
@crimsun @pinkcathodecat each to their own imo. but I find slackware very practical -- very stable, and one of the best "set & forget" distros out there even if it requires a little config to make yourself #comfe.
-
@obrez sweeet. don't worry about quality, thank you for sharing!
(even the sound of that switch ... #comfe)
-
@zep if anything, it only made me feel more #comfe being here that you got that immediately. so I thank you for that.
-
@bru I get this. #comfe is important. I know IT pros still using hotmail and msn accounts they set up early-mid 2000s. And changing email addresses can be a pain -- folks try to reach me at old addresses 5+ years after I notified them (repeatedly) that I moved.
But for me, it comes down to whether my provider has my best interests in mind. When I'm left with no control over the data I leave in their care, if the provider works to create user-hostile features or system backends that work at the expense of my privacy/security, avoids full disclosure of security breaches when they occur, and leave me with no recourse to even contact them for simple account issues, the next course of action for me becomes clear: it's time to leave.
If people don't rush to the exits, unfortunately, the message to the big dataminers is: "We will continue to submit ourselves to your abuse." Sadly, most people don't seem to recognise it as such.
-
@quad @xj9 I'm lazy, too. but slackware is pretty Set & Forget as distros go imo. I carry over config files and #comfe tweaks I made years ago from install to install.
