I'm planning to flatten and rebuild most of my SBC fleet (multiple types of !rpi and similar devices). I intend to leave a couple of #raspi 0w devices and one #orange_pi zero device as #boinc clients. -

3. Some things that could go wrong with the WST: https://www.space.com/james-webb-space-telescope-deployment-points-of-failure
I haven't delved into it much. In particular, I have not sought out the answer to "Does the launch of the WST mean that the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) will be retired and deactivated?" ... It seems to me that if HST is still usable, they could benefit from running both simultaneously until HST is not longer usable. But then, I also favor investing money in rebuilding the big Arecibo radio telescope ... and adding smaller additional radio telescopes. When I visited the site, I left before dark, but if the site is dark enough and has clear skies often enough, I'd even be in favor of adding an advanced optical telescope.
If nothing else, they could add HST to the NASA Goldstone site's educational programs (I think schoolkids get to aim and monitor a radio telescope and get a lesson on interpreting the data received). I also still think some kind of networked "radiotelescope at home" project similar to the "SETI@Home" project (which runs on #BOINC) could be great for citizen science.

This is a Raspberry Pi that has been running #BOINC for less than two months. It makes me wonder how they allocate "credit". I know that many people have run BOINC on some powerful hardware. In conversation from web permalink -

Looked at #BOINCstats today. Two #RasPi Zero W devices and one original #Raspberry_Pi model B device are completing packets / work units, earning credit, but it hasn't shown up in the overall score yet. I guess the good thing is that they are contributing to various #BOINC projects.
The #XU4 is powered off, so its issues are not relevant to BOINCstats scores or rankings. In conversation from web permalink -

Wondering whether there's some issue with #BOINCstats' tabulations of tasks / work-units completed.
My total hasn't budged, despite three devices that each are completing #BOINC work units and being credited for it.In conversation from web permalink -

So it looks like the #XU4 is not able to handle #BOINC, even with limits that constrain BOINC projects to 50% CPU usage and half the cores. It could be that BOINC and some daily OS task together trigger the freeze ups ... so now I'm wondering whether a Raspberry Pi Zero W (which is lower powered, but the model has less of an overheating issue than the #Odroid XU4 model) is capable of running some BOINC projects.
I did read somewhere that persistent problems (overheating?) with the XU4 led to a stripped down version with a giant heat sink case being sold as the network storage oriented #Odroid #HC1 and Odroid #HC2 devices. I think that was either on the Ameridroid site or in the Amazon descriptions for the "home cloud" devices. In conversation from web permalink -

The #Odroid #XU4 keeps freezing up. Perhaps #BOINC is using too many resources, but I’ve dialed back CPU & memory in BAM to try to reduce the freezes.
So far, no noticeable improvement. In conversation from Shoyu permalink -

I found my old BAM (BOINC Account Manager) info, so this #Odroid #XU4 is now running #BOINC and attached to my old BAM account. BAM says that account has completed more work-units than 89% of BOINC participants, so naturally, I'm going to reattach and go from there.
(Note: I've lived in this house 6.5 years and have not run BOINC at all until today, so being that high in the stats with the old equipment I used says something about the difficulty attracting and retaining people who'll devote some spare resources to research projects. There's also the possibility that BAM / BOINCStats only cover people who are specifically participating in that activity.)
I think I'll repurpose the other XU4 and attach it to BOINC through #Gridcoin. (I think this will show up as a separate account in the stats.)In conversation from web permalink -

I see that Iceloops is doing something similar to https://magpi.raspberrypi.org/articles/share-boinc with his #Odroid #XU-4.
I think that is a good idea, and I'm planning to spin up a #BOINC node with my own XU-4 soon. Or maybe an older #Raspberry_Pi (the !RasPi 4 seems a little expensive right now, and I already have a Raspberry Pi model 2B and a model 3B that I can repurpose). In conversation from web permalink Attachments

@musicman No. SETI@Home is "paused", but people that ran it will have #BOINC installed (it is one of many projects that use BOINC), so someone wanting to participate in Rosetta@Home could just add that project in BOINC while they await the revival of SETI. Went into the garage to see whether there was an old computer that I could press into service with F@H (though I've heard the project has temporarily run out of work-units) and #BOINC. I thought maybe I still had one out there, but then I remembered that I sent the old stuff to e-waste recycling a few years ago (other than some monitors ... I'll dig them out and set them aside for the next community drop-off soon).
Interesting that both #Folding_at_Home and #SETI_at_Home are out of work-units right now. (Well S@H is on pause while they process the backlog of finished work-units.)In conversation from web permalink
