The !SoCal #High_Desert (elevation 3000 feet and higher) and #Intermediate_Desert (below 3000 feet, but still higher and more northerly than the low deserts), which are portions of the #Mojave_Desert, are expecting peak temperatures of 100⁰F / 38⁰C and up, while the #Low_Desert (including the Colorado Desert, Sonoran Desert, and a couple of other smaller deserts) are expecting 110⁰F / 43⁰C and up.
Excessive heat warnings issued across much of desert areas of #CA, #NV, #AZ. Stay out of the heat as much as possible.

> In the fiscal year that ended last June, about 26 children died while in the agency's custody, including from overdoses, medical conditions, natural and still undetermined causes. In the previous fiscal year, that number was 14. The figures amount to a fatality rate of about 97 per 100,000 children during that period, the most recent for which data is available.
> That rate is higher than overall deaths of children in Arizona. Nationally, about 55 children died per 100,000 children in the general population of all causes in 2020 — similar to Arizona's number.
Given how quick the child died, that screams medical neglect--and not just by the foster parents--the social worker should have checked on the child, asked him questions about his care, including his known medical needs. I'm told that in California, if something like this happens, it is a big deal ... potentially career-ending for the social worker, without even counting the potential for criminal charges.
> Blodgett said he suspects the Arizona Department of Child Safety failed in its duty to protect his son, either by not monitoring his blood sugar levels or not ensuring that Jakob had enough insulin to prevent a serious, life-threatening complication known as ketoacidosis.
> "They couldn't keep him alive for two weeks, two weeks," the father told The Associated Press while on a recent furlough from jail. "That's absolutely insane. That was my pride and joy. I'm lost. I'm completely lost. My family is completely lost."
The father's fentanyl use definitely contributed to Jakob's death, but the #AZ department of children's services decision to place the child in that particular foster care home (instead of, for example, flying him to his grandmother's house) would be a proximate cause in my estimation. If I were a juror in a court case, I would favor a minimum of $50M in penalties, to shock the state into taking better care of children in need. Having a death rate in state custody that is almost double the rate outside of state custody is a tip-off that something is desperately wrong in the state agency.
Meanwhile in the Pacific, #Hurricane #Nora now expected to turn NE and break up over land. #AZ and #NM could get some rain from the remnants of the storm.
It is moving slower than #Ida, so this desert rainfall could be a week away from now.
Someone working in #AZ told me their governor is doing the same thing. (Well, I'm not sure whether my contact meant restrictions or actively seeking to vaccinate people. It was a short conversation.)
@Moon mentioned that #AZ didn't get their normal Summer monsoon rains this year. #SoCal didn't get that either. The annual July / August rains bypassed us this year.
I used to live near a hill, so that rain usually meant 4-6 inches of muddy water flowing across the front yard.
No changes from yesterday's post. I don't have the time to follow-up with everyone individually, sadly. Please feel free to translate this as many of the regions left are predominantly not English-speaking.
It's that time again. We are looking for regional judges for the Creative Commons Community Music Awards. Please let me know if you would be interested in taking a region.
The regions we have available are as follows (two regions are already taken): Mid-West - #ND, #SD, #NE, #KS, #MO, #IA, #MN, #WI, #IL, #IN, #MI, #OH Southwest - #OK, #TX, #NM, #AZ
In the future, we would love to break the regions up more, but having smaller regions this year has proved unmanageable. How much of that is due to covid? Who knows.
I have been told in the past that once-a-day posts are fine but any more than that gets tiresome. I doubt I will post daily, but if I post about this too much, please let me know!

#Daddy_A lived in #AZ for a year or two. When I told him how hot it is today, he immediately told me how glad he is to have left #SoCal and #Arizona to move to #NE ( #Nebraska gets both hot and humid, but not as hot as AZ or as humid as #Mississippi ).
