Constance Variable (lambadalambda@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Saturday, 01-Apr-2017 08:25:40 UTC Constance Variable The most important thing mastodon users need to realize is that you don't need to be on mastodon.social to be part of the network. Mastodon is just one server in the larger federation. - catalina, Lohan G on GNUSocial/ostatus and Hallå Kitteh like this.

Federation is the central advantage and disadvantage of our sites, so we need to make sure that everyone knows about it.
TL;DR: Promote the OStatus federation over $SITE or even $SOFTWARE and we'll all benefit. -
Constance Variable (lambadalambda@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Saturday, 01-Apr-2017 19:18:37 UTC Constance Variable @jansegers That doesn't make much sense because there can't be a 'flagship instance' for the federated network. There is no instance with a special status, all are just peers in the network. -
Constance Variable (lambadalambda@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Saturday, 01-Apr-2017 19:26:22 UTC Constance Variable @jansegers Yeah, it's misleading advertising. There is no 'mastodon network', only the OStatus federation. Mastodon didn't invent it and mastodon.social can't in any sense be a 'flagship instance' for it. Hallå Kitteh likes this. -
Constance Variable (lambadalambda@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Saturday, 01-Apr-2017 19:30:30 UTC Constance Variable @jansegers OStatus is the protocol that the instances in the network use to communicate. Both Mastodon and GNU Social are completely independent implementations of that (there are more, like friendica). -

Constance Variable (lambadalambda@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Saturday, 01-Apr-2017 19:32:50 UTC Constance Variable @jansegers It's another protocol, although I think they want to switch to ActivityPub in the future, which I guess a few OStatus servers will also implement, so the networks might merge again. -

tuttle_(defunct) (tuttle@somsants.net)'s status on Wednesday, 05-Apr-2017 06:27:52 UTC tuttle_(defunct) @vinzv There were already people on quitter/se who valued the freedom of federation before it became popular, and I remember how they made an effort to teach the new users who came later. I don't know if that same culture pre-existed on mastodon. -
tuttle_(defunct) (tuttle@somsants.net)'s status on Wednesday, 05-Apr-2017 06:30:03 UTC tuttle_(defunct) Didn't hannes2peer close registration during some time just for that reason? To avoid another identica? -
tuttle_(defunct) (tuttle@somsants.net)'s status on Wednesday, 05-Apr-2017 07:37:03 UTC tuttle_(defunct) @vinzv How many users did identica have, do you know? -
Alex Enkerli (enkerli@mastodon.cc)'s status on Sunday, 09-Apr-2017 16:44:58 UTC Alex Enkerli @lnxw48a1 @lambadalambda Asked #EvanProdromou about federation with #identica. According to him, Mastodon uses OStatus while Identi.ca uses “a new protocol”, preventing federation. Lost opportunity?

ActivityPub offers some potential to undo some of the #bifurcation's damage.
For example, it may help revitalize the nearly-moribund Pump.io network when GS and Mastodon and Diaspora can all interact seamlessly.Alex Enkerli likes this. -
