> Cycling and walking are not inherently dangerous. All danger begins and ends with cars, all harm comes from cars
Come to NYC. You will quickly see that bicycles can and do run into pedestrians, often causing harm. The New York taxi that ran into 6 people recently was struck by a (possibly motorized) bicycle that blew through a a traffic light.
(I suspect that the taxi driver panicked and hit the gas when he meant to hit the brake.)
I recently read that in an average year, one New York City pedestrian is killed by a bicyclist. That's nowhere near as many as cars kill, but it does show that regulating bicyclists is still important.

Oh, don't get me started on that topic... :(
In a sense, cycling is not even "ecological". Of course, when one restricts the sense of "ecological" or "environmental" to mean the amount of exhaust gas and pollution, then cycling may get a high grade. But as soon as one enlarges the concept to include the stress that something causes in an environment in all participants, esp. the weaker ones, then cycling definitely is an environmentally "unfriendly" activity which does more harm than good.
