I got sentimental. Years ago, when I first got web hosting, I bought (or more accurately, rented) some domains. One of those was for a business venture that #sonTwo was attempting to launch. A few years later, he changed directions and said it was okay to let it go. Once the domain expired, it was immediately snapped up by a domain squatter and I regretted losing it. Over the years, I'd occasionally check to see whether the squatter had given up.
Tonight, I checked and it was available, so I got it. Our daily telephone call will start momentarily and I will inform him then.

You did good. Often one needs to prevent the soiling of fond and precious memories by actions like you've taken. Better to idly pay for the domain name than to have your memories impaired.
