I think I’m going to go ahead and abandon #Manyverse / #SSB Secure Scuttlebutt.
Multiple month-long or longer outages of the pub servers that are necessary if you’re not in the same LAN with other users means that the network is unreliable. There is zero chance that anyone I know in person would return after such long outages, so it is not ready.

Likewise, I’ve pretty much abandoned #Jami (or #Ring, if you used it previously) because all my contacts dumped it years back when an update forced everyone to re-add their contacts.
-
I did download #Briar at one point, but never got any contacts to try it with me, so I never got to use it.

it was designed by a guy that lives on a boat right? I think Manyverse might well make sense for that situation.

Lol you reminded me that this stuff exists, and now I've spent much of the day playing with them again. I didn't get Manyverse going, ended up deleting it pretty quickly because the accessibility with Talkback wasn't very good. Not terrible mind you, just not good enough to get it up and going. I've been trying out oasis on the computer, and have it connected, and sort of working. Thus far, I am quite impressed with it. There were a few gotchas and not everything is working 100%, but still... Nice.

I was on #SSB Secure Scuttlebutt for a while (attended an #SSB seminar at last year's LibrePlanet conference), but the application was so resource intense that my laptop couldn't keep up. And, there wasn't the network effect I needed to make it useful. While there are probably interesting people to converse with, I have no idea how to find them.
I just logged back into #SSB, my userID is @BobJonkman (of course); my public key is @aFhD6GhqLVTFFjIGiuKidbaRiU6nC6JeLLvUROLMkL8=.ed25519
Try sending me a private message, maybe that's the way to follow each other.

@bobjonkman Yes, I haven't even gotten to building up much of a contact list, because even when it is working, discoverability is poor.
It is bedtime here in #SoCal, but I'll try to connect on #SSB / #Manyverse tomorrow.

I joined a public server at scuttle.us. It seems to work. Assuming I understand how all this all works, this should be the ID needed to follow me:
@5m+Io95TfPQn6uUxTwMLs7z94ckYSvjGemr4Ep6Ek2I=.ed25519
Further assuming it works the same way twice in a row, I should be able to see new followers and follow them back. The more I use Oasis, the more I like it.

@bobjonkman “There is no one in your community with that name.”
I suspect that without pubs or direct LAN connections, it isn’t possible to use #SSB.
I’ll see if I can connect to the same pub server that @storm is using: scuttlebutt.us ... though I’m already supposedly connected to a few others already.

And I can't figure out how to connect to a particular server. The #Patchwork #SSB client I'm using has a "+ Join Server" field, but it requires an invitation code. Which I can't generate unless I have a pub server. Which I can't join until I have an invitation code... Sigh.
#SSB: Concept: A+ ; Implementation: C+ ; Usability: F
You'd think a communications platform would make it easier to connect to people you want to communicate with...
