Who rembers the time when people were saying that everyone would be able to self host their own web page personal or commerce at home ?

@mangeurdenuage I'm just waiting for things to come full circle back to sneakernet.

I think there are still a couple of projects around making a !RasPi, #BeagleBone, or similar SBC the host of one's primary online presence. I just don't think that--given asymmetrical connection speeds and ISP interference--it is a workable solution, even in most Western countries. When you consider the poor countries where the only Internet service is mobile devices, there's no way it can put "most" people in control of their data.
We probably need to combine multiple approaches, where most approaches are hosted outside one's home or physical control.

#FreedomBox and #FreedomBone are the two that I believe are still actively developed. There was one that was based on ArchLinux and developed in Canada ... it suddenly went quiet for a year or two before announcing the end of the project.

@lnxw48a1 @mangeurdenuage I could host at home if I wanted to but I don't like the idea of my IP address being more public than it already is.

@geniusmusing @mangeurdenuage That's the other thing.

Consider this: you post a link to one of your photos, hosted on your #Raspberry_Pi. All of your 100 contacts' servers try to simultaneously download your picture, bringing your network connection to a halt.
We're going to need to redesign a lot of these sites, so they don't move so much data, and the data they do move isn't all moved at the same time.
