@Flophouse_Sam some people will no doubt use self-hosted media platforms for that, but whether or not *most* people will do so remains to be seen.
Right now, I'm using Funkwhale for two distinct use-cases at the same time:
1. Host a media library of files that I've paid for, which I've maintained for years. Some of these are tracks that cannot easily be found on services such as Spotify.
2. Host self-produced music to distribute freely to other Funkwhale instances.
The brilliant part here is that users can have multiple music libraries which have different permission sets. My purchased media is entirely private, meaning only I can see it. The music I make is in a public library that everyone else can see. All media from both libraries are seamlessly visible to me in the same player.
