you mean git-ssb? we already solved this one (and we don’t need servers either).

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Thursday, 13-Dec-2018 14:28:13 UTC Strypey @xj9 last time I looked at this it was barely a replacement for Gogs/ Gitea, let alone GH/ Gitlab. Has it evolved since then? Can I use all its functions with a web browser, or do I have to a client that depends on the gaping security wound that is Nodejs?

i mean, its still a tech demo, but it works. where is the fedforge demo?
you do need a client, and we do need one that is actually secure, but ssb and friends make fedi look like a legacy system. we're talking about writing new c2s applications in 2018? i sure hope not.clacke@libranet.de is my main likes this. -
Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Thursday, 13-Dec-2018 16:32:33 UTC Strypey @xj9 sorry if that came across more dismissive than it was intended. Those were genuine questions. Based on your answers, "solved problem" is a bit of a stretch.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Thursday, 13-Dec-2018 16:33:35 UTC Strypey @xj9 If it's features are not all usable from a web browser, it's not a replacement for GH. Also, given the recent revelations about the Nodejs library used to inject malicious code for stealing crypto-tokens into people's systems, I think we can be forgiven for not wanting to depend on anything that has even a vaguely Node-ish smell about it ;-) So,@Wolf480pl @alcinnz

"solved problem" means we can do it at all. which is a different category than "is a polished application" -

"usable from a web browser" is not what i want at all. i don't want to open a web browser, ever. web is a shit tech stack.
if anything, i'd like to see web crash and burn. -
Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Thursday, 13-Dec-2018 16:41:36 UTC Strypey @xj9 #ForgeFed is a specification, not a software package, so it's not as easy to throw up a demo. Like formalizing #ActivityPub itself, it will take time, because people from a number of existing projects have to hash out how their existing stacks will interact. I think it will be worth the wait, but the proof is in the pudding I guess ;-)

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Thursday, 13-Dec-2018 17:08:02 UTC Strypey @xj9 you have every right to your preferences. Using the web isn't compulsory, not should it be. But if we are talking about a replacement for GH, a fully functional web interface is a baseline requirement.

Strypey (strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Thursday, 13-Dec-2018 17:17:41 UTC Strypey @xj9 BTW I'm a keen tester of bleeding edge apps and I haven't tried #SSB yet, because I can't install it on a 32-bit PC without going through the valley of the shadow of death that is #NPM. If there's one thing I agree with Drew about, it's that choosing the right tools for the job matters. Like folks building #Electron apps, I think Dominic chose the wrong tools. Until that's fixed, SSB will remain a promising concept, but far from being ready for primetime. @alcinnz @Wolf480pl
