@stragu briefly, transistor density does not necessarily mean progress, knowledge doesn't spring out of nowhere and all systems have constraints.

For anyone new to AI, be highly skeptical of OpenAI or MIRI. MIRI used to be known as the Singularity Institute for AI (SIAI) and they're a bunch of Singularitarians.
-
@stragu There isn't anything wrong with talking about it, but when something which is easily disproven becomes the dominant narrative within a field it is disheartening/alienating.

@stragu in the typical infinity machine thought experiment the system just keeps self-improving. They always leave out the question of how self-improvement takes place. Where does knowledge really come from? When you realize that knowledge requires interaction, history and society then it becomes easy to see why these thought experiments are unlikely to happen and why some of the runaway obsessions are ridiculous.
There are dangers from technology, but they're not typically the kinds of dangers which Singularitarians obsess over.
