I took Cardinal, my Pi2 running Wheezy offline today in favor of a Pi3B running Stretch. It was relatively painless transferring configs, and I have enough power left to transfer some stuff off another Pi2/Wheezy machine.
I have to keep that one simply because there are packages running on it that can't be updated - functionality of the new packages changed from what I need., and there are some local, non-external services that depend on an older version of php.
I had briefly thought about using a 3B+, but after seeing how that board consumes 1/3 more current at idle because of the (useless to me) "Gigabit" Ethernet, I stuck with the old 3. Probably need to start picking up a few of those at hamfests, people sell them for next to nothing once the new board comes out. !rpi !raspberrypi
