@djsundog @jk also the TRS-80 had card-edge connectors on the back. That to me means that it wasn't completely off-limits like the Model III or the Atari 8-bit.

You were cordoned off from the internals of the machine unless you had a screwdriver.
The case for the Atari is that it never exposed any of the main board. There were no edge connectors on the Atari. Everything went through the serial SIO port.
