A friend recommended a portable soldering iron at HOPE to replace the horrible butane thing that is in the blue bag now.
I'm reading/watching revues ATM. It looks promising!
Ok, I'll be the Guinna pig and go first.
We'll see.

@lnxw48a1 Yes, this is the rig in question. I'm not sure where she got it. But, they are all over Banggood for ~$50.
@NYbill
What soldering iron do I need to melt solder on a 1950s appliance? I applied heat for 10 minutes to the power cord connections with my soldering iron and it didnt melt one tiny bit.
@lnxw48a1
@jonkulp They used big 'honkin' <- :P soldering 'guns'.
@jonkulp But honestly pal, solder melts at the same temp it did in the 50's. ;)
Any decent soldering rig should do.
@NYbill
Let me know. My good butane iron leaks like a sieve, and had a broken catalyst. My other one is horrendously bad. I could use a good replacement too.
@NYbill
Yeah, but the copper cord is probably drawing the heat away faster than the iron can inflict it. A good butane torch would work, but they are like hens teeth. Propane torch kits with big soldering tips exist, but not at Lowe's or HD. Try a plumbing supply store though. I have one that I got at a yard sale or something. To this day it's never been used.
